The Vietnam Road Administration has just issued a document requesting Road Management Zones 1 and 2, and the Departments of Transport affected by Typhoon No. 3, to urgently inspect and review the safety of bridge structures.
Accordingly, bridge works that must be inspected include large bridges, bridges with special structures, sea-crossing bridges, weak bridges, bridges with insufficient drainage openings, bridges built a long time ago, eroded bridges, bridges on rivers and streams with changed flow, affected by material exploitation, bridges with incidents, bridges with shallow foundations/pile foundations, bridges that have been or are being damaged or are likely to be damaged.
In particular, the aforementioned agencies noted the need to pay special attention to the structure of bridge piers and other structures that are susceptible to changes in water flow, erosion, material extraction, floods, collisions with or entanglement of watercraft.
"During the review and inspection process, if any emergency situation affecting the safety of the structure is detected, immediate corrective measures must be taken, and the competent authority must be notified in a timely manner to ensure the safety of the structure and traffic safety," the leader of the Vietnam Road Administration requested.
After completing this review and inspection, the road management areas and transportation departments need to report and propose to the competent authorities immediate and long-term solutions to address the causes affecting the safety of bridge structures.
Earlier, at 10:02 AM on September 9th, due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3 causing rain and floods, the Red River water level rose and the strong current caused the Phong Chau bridge to collapse, with pier T7 falling and two main spans T6 and T7 (two steel truss spans) resting on pier T7 collapsing.
Concerned about the safety of bridges due to rising and fast-flowing river levels amidst the storm and flood situation, the Phu Tho Department of Transport has banned traffic across Trung Ha Bridge and Tu My Bridge. The Hanoi Department of Transport has banned traffic across Long Bien Bridge and Duong Bridge and restricted vehicles from crossing Chuong Duong Bridge; the Yen Bai Department of Transport has banned people and vehicles from crossing Yen Bai Bridge…
