The Thai Ha 8888 ship carried 5,900 tons of cement from Nghi Son (Thanh Hoa) to Van Phong (Khanh Hoa). At 0:30 a.m. on October 27, while crossing the waters off Lang Co (Hue city), captain Nguyen Van Dong reported to the Da Nang Maritime Port Authority that the ship was tilted 15 degrees to the left and starting to sink. The ship's last recorded position was about 2 nautical miles north of Son Cha island. Captain Nguyen Van Dong decided to leave the ship, and the crew members (wearing life jackets) got into two life rafts and floating equipment.
After receiving the information, the Da Nang Maritime Port Authority mobilized ships in the surrounding area to coordinate the rescue of 8 crew members of the Thai Ha 8888 ship. At 3:20 a.m., all 8 crew members were discovered about 2.4 nautical miles north of Hon Son Cha, about 1.4 nautical miles west-northwest of the last recorded position of the Thai Ha 8888 ship. The health condition of the crew members was stable and they were brought to Da Nang Bay at about 6:00 a.m. the same day.
However, when the crew left the Thai Ha 8888 ship, they had not yet quickly closed the oil tank valve, which contained about 15,000 liters of DO oil.
