Da Nang: Assessing the cause and proposing solutions to deal with sinkholes on the road surface

On December 4, the People's Committee of Da Nang City announced that the Chairman of the People's Committee had directed the investor to temporarily stop construction in the area where subsidence occurred; assess the cause and propose a solution to ensure absolute safety for the area adjacent to Ngo Quyen - Nguyen Cong Tru Street.

Previously, on the afternoon of December 3, in the area of Nguyen Cong Tru Street (between Ngo Quyen and Tran Hung Dao Streets, An Hai Ward), a subsidence occurred, causing a gap in the road's jaw, affecting the drainage system and part of the roadbed. On-site inspection showed that the incident was initially determined to be related to the underground construction process of the Capital Square 3 urban area project invested by SIH Real Estate Company Limited.

The Department of Construction of Da Nang City said that the initial preliminary assessment showed that the Capital Square 3 urban area project is under underground construction, and the surrounding wall system of the project at the location adjacent to Nguyen Cong Tru Street is open. When it rains heavily, rainwater carries sand from the construction area near the location of the open surrounding wall into the project, causing the foundation to collapse, and the drainage pipe on Nguyen Cong Tru Street (adjacent to the project) to break; water from the drainage pipe erodes the soil, causing the roadbed and technical infrastructure to collapse.

In addition to the subsidence of Nguyen Cong Tru Street, according to the reporter's observation, on Ngo Quyen Street adjacent to the Capital Square 3 urban area under construction, there are also cracks stretching hundreds of meters. Currently, the authorities have blocked off motor vehicles from passing through this section of the road.

In order to ensure the safety of people, property and neighboring structures, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City requested the investor to temporarily stop construction in the area where subsidence occurred; urgently coordinate with contractors, supervisors and relevant parties to implement remedial and reinforcement measures to ensure absolute safety for the area adjacent to Ngo Quyen - Nguyen Cong Tru Street, including medium voltage power lines and traffic light frame systems.

The investor must report the incident situation, describe the current status and damage to people and property to the People's Committee of An Hai Ward and the Department of Construction; at the same time review, evaluate the cause and propose a solution before December 6.

The City People's Committee assigned the Da Nang Electricity Company to inspect the medium and low voltage power lines and the locations of power poles at risk of landslides for timely handling. The An Hai Ward People's Committee monitored the investor's recovery process, ensured order and traffic safety in the area and coordinated with specialized agencies to handle arising situations.
