On March 28th, 150 students from grades 6 to 9 in Ho Chi Minh City were surprised to experience AI in the fields of calligraphy, chess, poetry, and painting during the 2024 Good Writing and Calligraphy Contest.
This competition was organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted.
A memorable experience
Upon entering the examination room, many candidates assumed they would be given the exam paper and begin working on it. However, instead, they were treated to a cultural performance of "Thuong Ca Tieng Viet" (A Song of Love for the Vietnamese Language ) – a song composed by musician Duc Tri and performed by a group of students from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted.
Next, the competition organizers showed the contestants a song about their homeland, created by AI.
Immediately afterwards, the show's MC invited several contestants to share their thoughts on the two performances.

In the "chess" category: contestants watched and listened to footage of matches between Go players, Chinese chess players, and AI. The competition's MC asked the contestants to predict which side would win. At the end of the video, the Go player had won against the AI, but the Chinese chess player had lost to the AI.
In the "competition" section, contestants were asked to compose a poem using the keywords: youth, poetry, life. Within a very short time, quite a few contestants raised their hands and recited their poems aloud to the entire hall.
Next, the organizers announced a poem created by AI using the same keywords. Following that, the contestants gave their opinions, comments, and assessments on the differences between AI-generated poetry and human-written poetry.

In the "art" category: the competition organizers projected onto screens for contestants to view paintings created by AI and paintings by students participating in the Green Strokes competition, all with the theme "My City".
AI performs well, but...
Speaking in the auditorium, Nguyen Nhu Ngoc, a 9th-grade student from Nguyen Hien Secondary School in District 12, commented: "The experiential activities surprised me time and again. In my opinion, AI's creations were all very quick and addressed the keywords very well, but they didn't evoke much emotion in the viewers."

Similarly, Nguyen Thuy Linh, a 9th-grade student from Go Vap Secondary School in Go Vap District, confided: "The AI's paintings are very beautiful, with quite sharp lines, but when I look at AI paintings, I don't feel the same emotions as when I see paintings drawn by students. Looking at this painting, I feel nostalgic and emotional when I encounter familiar and beloved images of Ho Chi Minh City."
After experiencing the four fields of music, chess, calligraphy, and painting along with AI, the contestants received the exam questions and had 90 minutes to complete them.
