About 30 years ago, when he saw that people were still poor and could not afford to send their children to school, veteran Nguyen Huu Thoi (78 years old; residing in Long Xuyen ward, An Giang province) opened a charity class.

Journey to nurture the future

Since then, the class has been maintained for many years, as a place for homeless, homeless, and poor children to study.

When we asked about setting up the charity class, Mr. Thoi's eyes lit up and he spoke enthusiastically.

Accordingly, since retiring, seeing the plight of the poor children, Mr. Thoi asked the ward leaders to set up a charity class.

"The people in this hamlet are very poor, they live from all over the country; many children do not go to school, do not have the conditions to go to school. Therefore, I feel I need to do something to help the children. Anything is possible, except for the lack of education" - Mr. Thoi shared.

According to Mr. Thoi, when the class opened, there were only about 5 students. Later, the class increased to about 8 students. The students studied 2 main subjects: Math and Vietnamese, and only studied in a small, simple classroom.

After many years of maintenance, with the support and care of the government and benefactors, the classroom has now been built more spaciously. Currently, there is a classroom of more than 60 square meters, for the age group from grade 1 to grade 5 with about 15 students.

Mr. Thoi added that, due to his old age and poor health, he has assigned Ms. Phan Thu Thuy (50 years old; retired teacher; residing in Long Xuyen ward) and Ms. Tran Kim Phuong (70 years old) to teach and manage the class.

Chau Ly (14 years old, 3rd grade student) expressed: "Every day coming to school here is a joy for me. The teachers here teach very well, I have learned many lessons, I feel very grateful to them for their dedication to teaching us."

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (a resident of Nguyen Du hamlet, My Binh ward) said that most of the students come from difficult circumstances and do not have access to formal education. Since studying with Ms. Phuong, Ms. Thuy has seen that the children are much more obedient and polite, no longer causing trouble or fighting like before.

Teacher like a mother

Having been with the children here for nearly 15 years, Ms. Thuy said that the students here do not receive a full education from a young age, so her commitment is to give the children the opportunity to learn and gain enough knowledge so that when they grow up, they can support themselves.

In addition to teaching, the teachers here also work to mobilize and connect with the children's families so that they can attend school without any cost.

Local government representatives visited the children and teachers at the charity class.

While teaching spelling to first graders, Ms. Phuong said that teaching the children here is difficult, as many of them are disobedient and naughty because they were not loved since childhood.

As a former primary school teacher in Long Xuyen ward, after retiring, Ms. Phuong came to this class to teach the children for free.

"What motivates me to come to this class is my love for the children. They have grown up in poverty and hardship, so I hope that my lessons will be valuable things that they will always remember, so that on their journey to adulthood, they will be kind people, build a bright future, and contribute to society," Ms. Phuong confided.

According to Ms. Phuong, in addition to teaching, they also teach life skills, skills related to painting, music , and skills to deal with bullying and abuse.

"We came here with the hope of sowing seeds of love with the children, so that they here have more motivation to cope with their current difficult lives, and from there overcome themselves to build their future," Ms. Phuong shared.

The diligent teachers

Mr. Tran Van Kiem, Secretary of Nguyen Du Hamlet, Long Xuyen Ward, said that the charity class in the locality is very meaningful for poor and disadvantaged students who do not have the conditions to go to regular schools.

"Luckily for the students, there are always diligent teachers here who love them wholeheartedly and teach them good lessons, helping them to be more confident on their future path," Mr. Kiem commented.
