Call identification: a solution for preventing cyber fraud.

VTC NewsVTC News12/11/2024

The rapid development of telecommunications and information technology has made a positive contribution to economic development, government administration, and people's lives.

However, alongside the positive aspects, there are also many risks as malicious individuals use technology to carry out fraudulent activities.

Sophisticated tactics such as impersonating judicial or government agencies have become common, causing significant harm to citizens.

The Department of Telecommunications ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) has collaborated with telecommunications companies to implement a Voice Brandname service for mobile phone numbers of government agencies.

Specifically, when ministries, ministerial-level agencies, or government agencies contact citizens, the name of the agency will be displayed on the phone screen instead of just the phone number. Citizens can easily identify official calls from authorities, helping them avoid fraudulent calls.

Currently, 732 mobile phone numbers belonging to state agencies have been registered for identification to facilitate direct communication with organizations and individuals for professional purposes.

Major network operators such as Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone, along with virtual mobile networks like Itel, Mobicast, Local, VNSky, and FPT, have completed the registration of identifiers for these phone numbers. When receiving calls from these identified numbers, people will see the name of the government agency displayed instead of the phone number.

This means that if you receive a call from a 10-digit phone number (starting with 03, 05, 07, 08, or 09) claiming to be from a government agency but not displaying a name, you should be wary and not comply with any requests from the caller. This is a sign of impersonation calls aimed at fraud.

Besides mobile phone numbers, the Ministry of Information and Communications is actively implementing identification for fixed-line phone numbers registered by state agencies. However, to do this, a transition from old technology (PTSN) to IP technology is needed, along with upgrading equipment and transmission lines.

Therefore, the process of identifying calls for landline numbers will require time for telecommunications companies to contact each entity for consultation, design solutions, and complete legal procedures.

Some landline subscribers, without a terminal device supporting a screen, will not be able to identify the caller ID when receiving a call. Vietnamobile mobile network has not yet implemented support for this feature, therefore users of this network need to be extremely vigilant against calls from individuals claiming to be from government agencies.

The Ministry of Information and Communications advises citizens, upon receiving calls from individuals claiming to represent government agencies, to carefully verify the information and request a callback via a verified mobile phone number to ensure accuracy. If suspected of being a scam call, citizens should report it to the authorities for prompt action.

Implementing caller ID is one of the important steps to enhance public safety in the context of increasingly sophisticated phone scams.

The Ministry of Information and Communications continues its efforts, working with agencies and businesses, to create a safe and reliable communication environment for the people.
