DeSantis's decision was announced just two days before the crucial Republican primary in New Hampshire. This means former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is now Trump's only remaining opponent in the Republican primary race, CNN reported.
The decision to suspend his campaign also came less than a week after DeSantis lost to Trump in the Iowa caucus despite investing heavily in the state. Many were surprised by the decision, as DeSantis was considered the most promising Republican candidate after Trump.
Ron DeSantis campaigned in New Hampshire on January 19.
DeSantis's departure has created a one-on-one battle between Haley and Trump. However, a large majority of DeSantis's supporters appear to be leaning toward Trump rather than Haley, who tends to be more moderate. In New Hampshire, about two-thirds of DeSantis's supporters consider Trump their second choice, according to a survey from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.
In a video posted on X, DeSantis endorsed Trump while bidding farewell to his opponent Haley.
According to polls, Trump is leading Haley by a considerable margin in New Hampshire. His campaign team hopes a second consecutive victory would secure him the Republican Party's nomination, Reuters reported.
Trump also leads in South Carolina, Haley's home state, where voting is scheduled for February 24. The former UN ambassador's defeat in her home state could derail her campaign.
At a campaign event in Seabrook, New Hampshire, Haley commented on DeSantis's departure from the race: "Now, I'll tell you this: May the best woman win."
In a statement following DeSantis's announcement, Trump's team thanked their opponent for his support.
Early last year, DeSantis was considered a leading presidential candidate due to his conservative views and tough stance. He had led Trump in several polls.
However, support for DeSantis has declined in recent months, due to a flawed campaign strategy, coupled with the unwavering support of many voters for Trump.
According to most polls, over 70% of Republicans have a favorable view of the former president. This puts DeSantis in a position where he must both appeal to voters loyal to Trump and convince those who intensely dislike him.
