After the merger, Dong Cuong commune has an area of 146.3 km2 and a population of 21,821 people. Its large scale and socio -economic characteristics have created considerable pressure on the environment.
In the commune, there is the famous Dong Cuong temple, which welcomes about 240,000 visitors each year, this number can reach 2,000 people/day during peak festival season.
In addition, Trai Hut market - one of the main wholesale markets in the area with 47 permanent businesses, discharges about 1.5 tons of waste into the environment every day. Along with that, 541 small and medium-sized livestock farms are scattered in residential areas... All of this has made the problem of waste and pollution a big challenge, requiring a fundamental and effective solution.
Discussing this issue, Mr. Tran Thong Nhat, Vice Chairman of Dong Cuong Commune People's Committee, shared: "Immediately after the merger, the Party Committee and the commune government identified environmental protection as one of the key and urgent tasks. We understand that, to solve the root of the problem, nothing is more effective than promoting the role of the people as the main subject. Every solution must start from changing the awareness and actions of each family and each person."

That guiding viewpoint was quickly materialized with synchronous solutions. The commune has maintained the effective operation of the waste collection team with a frequency of 3 times/week on main roads. However, the biggest bright spot comes from the community's initiative.
Along with that, the movement of sorting waste at source has received positive response from the people. Up to now, the whole commune has had 2,114 households (accounting for 38%) voluntarily building organic waste pits to treat agricultural waste, both reducing the load on the collection system and providing fertilizer for crops. Thanks to that, the rate of household waste sorted at source is estimated at 56%.
In particular, the model of “Self-managed routes” undertaken by mass organizations such as the Women’s Union, the Veterans’ Association, and the Youth Union has shown remarkable effectiveness. The entire commune has built 18 routes with a total length of 23 km. Flower roads and “Green Sundays” with 154 general cleaning campaigns have become familiar images, spreading a sense of responsibility in the community.

As a person who is closely involved in grassroots work, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dong - Head of An Khang village, excitedly said: “In An Khang village, waste collection is organized regularly twice a week with the participation of the people. People are all aware of sorting waste right at home. Thanks to that, the village roads and alleys are always clean. However, in some places, there is still littering, we are continuing to mobilize and request the commune to take more drastic measures to ensure the common environment”.
The story at Trai Hut market also shows a change in awareness. Mr. Pham Trung Yen, Head of the Market Management Team, shared: “The work is very hard, collecting up to 1.5 tons of garbage every day. We actively encouraged traders to voluntarily collect garbage at a fixed point for the environmental team to move. At first, some people did not cooperate, and some people did not register and still dumped garbage secretly. But by persistently propagating to people to understand that keeping clean is to protect their own health, keeping the market clean makes business more convenient, and gradually everyone supported and implemented it.”

The valuable thing is that in the context of a difficult budget, the people and businesses have joined hands to contribute 174 million VND to local environmental protection. The number not only shows the material value, but also shows the consensus and great determination of the whole community.
Thanks to the synchronous, drastic and popular participation, environmental protection work in Dong Cuong has achieved remarkable results. Up to now, 65% of domestic solid waste has been collected and treated according to regulations, 96% of households have access to clean water. More importantly, spontaneous garbage collection points in the area have almost disappeared, and people's awareness of environmental protection has been significantly raised.

The journey to “solve the environmental problem” in Dong Cuong is still ahead, but the initial results have confirmed a correct direction: when the “Party’s will” matches the “people’s will”, all difficulties can be resolved. That is a solid foundation for Dong Cuong to continue to strive and successfully build a model new rural commune in the near future.
