The match did not have many surprises when the Vietnamese women's team quickly asserted their strength from the 4th minute with the opening goal of striker Pham Hai Yen. The gap was doubled for the red team in the 23rd minute thanks to Hai Linh. Only 3 minutes later, the third goal came for the Vietnamese women's team when Pham Hai Yen made a beautiful header into the Malaysian net. In the 32nd minute, the gap was widened to 4-0 when Hai Linh scored a masterpiece with a classy one-touch shot that left the Malaysian goalkeeper completely helpless.
After the break, coach Mai Duc Chung sent Thai Thi Thao onto the field. The girl wearing the number 11 shirt immediately shone with a hat-trick to seal the score of 7-0 for the Vietnamese women's team. The only regrettable thing in this match for the Vietnamese women's team was probably that captain Huynh Nhu could not get her name on the scoreboard despite playing 20 minutes on the field. However, the big win on the opening day was also a commendable achievement for coach Mai Duc Chung's team in their journey to defend the Southeast Asian title.
