Vietnam's flood relief project wins Tech4Good Asia-Pacific award

The Tech4Good competition is part of Huawei's long-term "Seeds for the Future" program launched globally, aiming to create a playground for young talents to propose technological solutions to solve social problems.

The Vietnamese team consisted of 6 students from 4 universities in Vietnam, including Mai Thi Phuong, Nguyen Thi Thu Trang and Dinh Hoang Anh (Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology); Pham Quynh Trang (VinUni University); Cao Sy Duong ( Hanoi University of Science and Technology), and Tran Dang Nam (Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport).

The SkyNet project is developed based on the application of drones, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and AI technology to support faster and smarter search and rescue of victims in flooded areas.

The project was developed with the criteria: high-resolution image capture, stable mobile data broadcasting and real-time data reporting. SkyNet development costs are also optimally calculated to bring economic benefits and diverse application scenarios when commercialized to the market.

To participate in the Tech4Good Asia-Pacific competition, 2 months before, 6 students had to pass 2 rounds of the "Seeds for the Future 2024" program. First was the preliminary round with the participation of more than 400 students, then studied and competed with 40 talented students to achieve the highest academic scores and qualify for international competitions.

At the Tech4Good Asia-Pacific round, 6 Vietnamese students continued to compete with 24 teams of outstanding technology talents from 24 other countries in the region. After 2 consecutive rounds, the Vietnamese team won convincingly with the Skynet project rich in applications and an impressive presentation, based on the practical context of super typhoon Yagi, which recently caused economic damage of 2 billion USD (0.5% of GDP) to Vietnam.

Students Pham Quynh Trang and Cao Sy Duong presented about the SKYNET project at the competition.

Mr. Macky Zhang, General Director of Huawei Vietnam, expressed his joy when 6 Vietnamese students won absolute victory in this year's regional competition.

He shared: "We are very proud that the 6 Vietnamese "seeds" have won the top position, proving their individual abilities through the impressive SkyNet project and inspiring other young talents to actively transform creative ideas into national practices. The exciting global final stage is waiting for you to show and shine even more."

Sharing the joy of the Vietnamese student team's victory, Master Nguyen Van Anh, Head of Partnership and Development Department of VinUni University, shared: "This year's competition has brought many creative solutions to pressing issues in many countries, especially the issue of flooding, which is also the topic that Pham Quynh Trang - a VinUni student, and her friends chose. Their topic aims to support the search for victims in the context of storms, using drone technology applying AI and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), stemming from the super typhoon Yagi 2 weeks ago to northern Vietnam, causing great impacts on the economy and people's lives."

In addition to the Tech4Good APAC competition, students also participated in many activities during a week-long experience in China from September 23 to 29.
