Late one afternoon at the end of the year, as night gradually fell from the peak of Rang Dong mountain over the houses of the Thai and H'Mong ethnic groups in the villages of Rang Dong, Phinh Sang, Bon, Ta Ma, etc., many people were still rolling up their sleeves and trousers to pick up stones and neatly stack them along the roadside. In muddy areas, they used hoes to pile the soil into mounds.
These are all residents whose houses are located along the route; this is not their responsibility, but because they want the road to be completed soon, they have proactively contributed their efforts to help the construction unit work faster and more efficiently.
Pointing to the neatly piled mounds of earth, Mr. Lo Van Hoa (from Bon village) said: "The earth is piled up so that the construction vehicles can move faster. In the dark, if someone happens to pass by, they won't trip and fall."

Elaborating on the Bon villagers' wish for a road, Mr. Hoa said: "Bon village, Rang Dong village… used to belong to Phinh Sang commune (formerly Tuan Giao district), but now, according to the adjustments, these villages belong to Pu Nhung commune. Previously, in this area, there were only dirt roads connecting the villages; the road from the village to the commune was less bad, but it was only passable for one season, because during the rainy season, it could only be traveled on foot."
The difficult roads made life even harder for the people; they produced a lot of rice and corn but couldn't sell much; they had to transport their pigs and chickens to the district market to sell, and when they returned, the cost of gasoline, oil, and labor was barely enough to cover the expenses. And so, the lives of the people were trapped in a cycle of hardship, poverty, and isolation.
In 2022, when they heard that the People's Committee of Dien Bien province had decided to invest in a road connecting National Highway 6 - the center of Rang Dong commune - the center of Phinh Sang commune - Phang Cu (formerly Tuan Giao district) to connect the communes of Mun Chung, Rang Dong, Phinh Sang (formerly Tuan Giao district) with Xa Nha commune (formerly Tua Chua district), the people in these communes were very happy.
In the area where the road construction is underway, 295 families are affected by the project's impact on their agricultural land, gardens, and houses. However, the residents have all agreed and supported handing over the land so that the construction unit can proceed according to plan.

Mr. Dinh Danh Phan, a technical officer of the Project Management and Land Development Board of Area 3 (representing the investor), said: The road connecting National Highway 5 to Rang Dong, Phinh Sang, and Xa Nha has a total length of 26.4 km, with a scale of mountainous road class V and class VI. Of this, the main route from National Highway 6 to the center of Rang Dong commune - Nam Din intersection - Phang Cu has a length of 24.2 km, and the branch route from Nam Din intersection to the center of Phinh Sang commune has a length of 2.2 km; the total investment for the entire road is 80 billion VND. Construction is scheduled from 2023 to the end of 2026, but right from the start of construction, the construction units and the investor committed to the local people that the entire route would be completed by June 2026 at the latest, to facilitate convenient travel for the people.
Directly supervising the construction at the site, Mr. Nguyen Van Khac said: "The impact of rain and storms last year interrupted construction, but in return, the construction proceeded smoothly thanks to the support of the local people. This is an encouragement and motivates the workers to work harder day and night to complete the road as soon as possible."

"Along this road, there are 295 families whose land needs to be reclaimed and cleared, but the villagers all agreed to hand over the land to the construction unit. Not only that, they also contributed their efforts to support the workers in building the road, following the motto 'wherever the road is built, it will be clean and beautiful,' so that the road is convenient and the path to escaping poverty for the villagers is less bumpy," said the head of Rang Dong village, Bui Huu Van, happily, before he left with a hoe to continue clearing the road. Behind him, the night had already fallen!
