EU initially approves plan to end Russian gas imports
During the meeting in Luxembourg, a plan to phase out Russian gas was supported, including signing new contracts from January next year, ending existing short-term contracts from June 2026 and ending all long-term contracts by 2028. This plan will still have to be presented to the plenary session of the European Parliament, as well as need to be approved by a majority of member states to come into effect.
Energy Minister Lars Aagaard of Denmark, which holds the EU presidency, said an energy-independent Europe would be stronger and more secure. He stressed that while the EU had made progress in weaning itself off Russian oil and gas, the process was not yet complete. He said the overwhelming support for the ban by ministers was a testament to the bloc’s clear political will.
According to the draft regulations, short-term Russian gas supply contracts signed before June 17, 2025, will continue until June 17, 2026. Long-term contracts can be extended until December 31, 2027. In addition, any amendments to existing contracts are only allowed for specific technical purposes and must not increase import volumes, but there are some exceptions for landlocked countries affected by changes in supply routes.
