Reuniting with a former patient after 20 years.

Present at the outpatient department from early morning, upon hearing the news that Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan had returned to practice at Friendship Hospital, many patients came to see him. Some came for examinations, others came to greet and encourage him upon learning of his return.

Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan shares his thoughts on returning to 'medical practice'.

Having just returned to her ward after a CT scan, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong Van (86 years old, residing in Dong Da district, Hanoi ) - one of the first patients Professor Tuan examined upon his return to the hospital - could not hide her emotion upon meeting again the doctor who had placed a heart stent in her more than 20 years ago.

Ms. Vân said that more than 20 years ago, she was admitted to the Hanoi Heart Hospital for emergency treatment and was saved when she was in critical condition by Dr. Tuấn, who placed a stent in her heart. "I was very surprised to meet Dr. Tuấn again at the Friendship Hospital. I never thought I would have such a chance encounter," Ms. Vân said, her voice choked with emotion.

After inquiring about the patient's health, Professor Tuan encouraged the elderly man to rest assured and focus on treatment. The elderly man also encouraged Professor Tuan to continue his efforts to treat many other patients.

Right next to him, Mrs. Pham Thi Hanh (80 years old, Hanoi) smiled and said upon seeing Professor Tuan: "I've heard your name for a long time, but only now have I met you. Congratulations, doctor."

Professor Tuan also couldn't hide his joy at being able to put on his lab coat, go from ward to ward, and return to the work that he said had become ingrained in his blood.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online about his daily work, Professor Tuan shared that the job of a practicing doctor involves visiting patient wards with doctors and sharing case studies with colleagues.

"Currently, I am still undergoing the required 12-month practical training period to obtain my professional license, so I cannot yet sign patient records or handle surgical instruments… But I can still consult with colleagues on difficult cases, conduct ward rounds, and advise patients based on my experience," Professor Tuan said.

Regarding the 12-month practical training period required for a medical license, Professor Tuan believes that continuous learning is essential in any profession, and even more so in medicine. He also shared that during his time away from practicing, he regularly reads medical books and materials sent by family and colleagues. He plans to focus on completing his work during these 12 months before returning to provide medical care to the public.

When asked why he applied for a practical training at Friendship Hospital, Professor Tuan shared that while working at Bach Mai Hospital, he frequently consulted with doctors and nurses at Friendship Hospital on difficult cases. He also personally provided direct support to the hospital.

In addition, Friendship Hospital is also a place for treating high-ranking officials, elderly people with multiple underlying conditions, serious illnesses, and especially cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, he wanted to practice there to work with his colleagues in caring for patients.

Professor Tuan also said that since yesterday, when people learned that he was going to Friendship Hospital for practical training, many colleagues and patients have called and messaged to congratulate and encourage him. He also shared, "After everything, now I want some quiet time, away from the noise, to focus on studying and working professionally so that I can continue practicing medicine to save lives."

Previously, in April 2023, the Hanoi People's Court sentenced Dr. Nguyen Quang Tuan to three years in prison for violations committed during his time as a manager. This sentence did not prohibit him from holding any position or practicing medicine after serving his sentence.

In the verdict, Mr. Tuan's criminal conduct was completely unrelated to his medical expertise and was merely a violation of management regulations. These were significant mitigating circumstances that resulted in a lower sentence than the one recommended by the prosecutor.
