Pope Francis appeared via screen in St. Peter's Square.
The Associated Press reported on November 26th that Pope Francis said he has pneumonia but will still travel to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) next week to attend the United Nations climate conference (COP28).
He did not appear at the window overlooking St. Peter's Square as he had on previous Sundays, a day after the Vatican announced he had a mild case of the flu. He presided over the televised midday service from the chapel in the Vatican hotel where he was staying.
"Happy Sunday to you all. I cannot appear at the window today because I have pneumonia," Pope Francis said, adding that a priest sitting next to him would read the message in his place.
When appearing on television, Pope Francis was coughing and had a large bandage on his hand. The Vatican did not immediately respond to AP's question about whether he was receiving intravenous treatment.
The Pope said he had pneumonia, even though the Vatican said the day before that a CT scan at a hospital in Rome had come back negative for lung complications.
In his message, the Pope said he would still go to the UAE for the COP28 climate conference and would deliver his planned speech on December 2nd. He stated that climate change is a serious issue, especially for young people.
Pope Francis will turn 87 on December 17th. Prior to that, he was hospitalized in Rome on March 29th with a respiratory infection and spent three days receiving treatment. The Vatican stated that he had bronchitis requiring intravenous antibiotic treatment.
