On the evening of September 9th, the Indonesian U23 team suffered a 0-1 defeat against the South Korean U23 team in the final match of Group J of the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers. This result means the Indonesian team will not be able to secure a ticket to the finals next year in Saudi Arabia.
U23 Indonesia could only finish second in Group J. With 4 points, they did not qualify for the wildcard spot for the four best-performing second-placed teams. Conversely, U23 South Korea confidently advanced to the next round as group winners with a perfect 9 points.
The South Korean team dominated the game and scored an early goal in the 6th minute. From a tight angle, Hwang Doyun unleashed a powerful shot, giving goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi no chance to save it, opening the scoring for the visitors.
Trailing behind, the Indonesian U23 coach brought on attacking players like Jens Raven, Kakang Rudianto, and Robi Darwis, but they couldn't spring a surprise. South Korea displayed a tight and disciplined pressing style of play.
Whenever the Southeast Asian representatives launched an attack, the South Korean players immediately pressed them, denying them any space to play the ball.
The 1-0 score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
This defeat officially ended Indonesia's dream of participating in the U23 Asian Championship finals. Their naturalization policy continues to be questioned, as their youth teams have repeatedly suffered painful defeats.
