Hanoi: Student knocks down teacher in class, other students do not intervene

A video recorded a male student at Dai Kim Secondary School (Hanoi) grabbing the teacher's hair and knocking her down in class. Many students witnessed it but no one intervened.

The video above is about 2 minutes long, recording the scene where the teacher was reminding two students when another male student in uniform grabbed her and snatched an object she had just confiscated.

Then the male student grabbed the teacher’s hair, pulled it out and threw her to the floor. There were many students in the class who witnessed it, some just watched but did not dare to intervene, and some students sat there doing other things, not paying attention to what was happening.

According to a September 19 report from Dai Kim Secondary School sent to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the incident occurred at around 3:00 p.m. on September 16, when it was about to be recess.

Teacher TH - homeroom teacher of class 7A14 - entered the classroom to warn a student who was holding a sharp toy. She asked the student to give it to her and said she would confiscate it because it was a dangerous toy, and school rules forbade students from bringing it to class.

When hearing what she said, B. - another student - stood up and asked her to return his toy. Ms. H. firmly refused to return it.

B. pulled the teacher's hair, pinned her down to snatch back the toy, and then threw her to the floor. According to the report, the class monitor tried to stop her but was unsuccessful, so he told his classmates to close the curtains so that people outside in the hallway could not see.

After leaving the classroom, Ms. H. reported to the principal and returned to the classroom with the principal. The principal asked B. to apologize to the teacher in front of the whole class and asked both students sitting next to B. (the student holding the sharp object) to write a report. According to these students, because B. was tall and big, they were afraid to intervene.

The school invited B.’s parents to a meeting the same afternoon as the incident. B.’s family apologized to the teacher and asked for their child to be absent from school on September 17 to undergo a mental health check. B. returned to school on September 18.

On the afternoon of September 18, the school board and the homeroom teacher worked with B.'s parents to propose a disciplinary measure for B.'s serious violation. B.'s family also presented their situation and expressed their wish to take their child back to school for 10 days to help him change. The homeroom teacher agreed with B.'s family's proposal.

Dai Kim Secondary School is also asking Dinh Cong Ward Police to intervene, investigate the source of the clip's distribution without the school's permission and handle it according to the law.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on September 19 , Mr. Tran The Cuong, director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the department had received the information and requested the school, parents and homeroom teacher to clarify the incident, find out the cause of the incident, the student's behavior, coordinate with the student to have health and psychological check-ups, and have the results from the professional agency to have support and education measures.
