The Hanoi student team participating in the 2024 International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) consists of 6 members, including 2 students from Newton Secondary and High School, 3 students from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and 1 student from Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted. These are the 6 students who won first prize at the selection exam for the 2024 Junior Science Olympiad organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
When the representative of the Department of Education and Training called the names of the 6 official team members, the people present gave a round of applause and admiration for the students. Notably, the first 2 students from Newton Secondary and High School were called, Vu Nhat Long and Vuong Ha Chi (class 10G0).
To register for the official competition team, the students went through many qualifying rounds and intense competitions with 226 students from 14 high schools in Hanoi . Based on the results of students taking the exam in all 5 subjects (math, physics, chemistry, biology and English), the Organizing Committee selected and ranked 129 students with 6 first prizes, 33 second prizes, 38 third prizes and 52 consolation prizes.
Congratulating the prize-winning students, especially the 6 members who made it to the official team, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said: The team selection results are the students' initial success. They are the beautiful flowers of the capital's education and training sector and will represent more than one million high school students in Hanoi to participate in the 2024 International Junior Science Olympiad held in the Republic of Romania from December 2 to 10, 2024.
“We are very proud and happy about the students’ achievements. This achievement was surprising because at that moment, both teachers and students were overwhelmed when they learned the results. On the contrary, it was not surprising, because the two students Vu Nhat Long and Vuong Ha Chi are both excellent students of Newton School…” - teacher Hoang Thi Man, Principal of Newton Secondary and High School shared.
At the City-level Excellent Student Competition for the 2023-2024 school year, Nhat Long was the student who won the title of Top Student in Science. In the recent 10th grade exam, he passed the Chemistry major - University of Education High School for the Gifted and the English major - Foreign Language High School. Vuong Ha Chi won the first prize - City-level excellent student competition in Science; second prize - City-level excellent student competition in Biology. He also made an impression when he passed 4 wishes to enter specialized schools: Pedagogy, Natural Sciences, Hanoi - Amsterdam, and Hanoi - Amsterdam dual degree.
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is the most prestigious competition for 15-year-old students. The knowledge of the competition is comprehensive, integrating 3 natural science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology). Candidates will take the exam in English with 3 tests: Multiple choice, theory (individual scoring) and practice (team scoring). Therefore, in addition to scientific knowledge and good English proficiency, candidates need to have knowledge of mathematics, the ability to work in groups and many other skills.
It is known that 2024 is the second consecutive year that Newton School has students in the official team to participate in the IJSO exam and this is considered a miracle. From 2007 to now, the Ministry of Education and Training and the Hanoi People's Committee have entrusted the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to select and establish a team to participate in the IJSO exam. And up to now, Newton is still the only private, non-specialized school with candidates participating in the exam.
In 2023, the Hanoi team has 6 students participating in this exam in Thailand, Newton School has 1 representative, Hoang Pham Minh Khanh, class 10G0. Of the 6 medals received by the Vietnamese delegation, Minh Khanh excellently won the Silver Medal and was also the highest achievement of the entire delegation. The remaining 5 Bronze Medals belong to students of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
The results of the IJSO 2023 exam and the official selection of the team to participate in the IJSO 2024 exam have continued to affirm the educational quality of Newton School and the right direction of the school's Board of Directors in training and fostering excellent students.
Also at the IJSO 2024 team launch ceremony, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training awarded certificates and prizes to students with outstanding achievements in the team selection exam. Among them, Newton School had 8 students. They are:
Dang Bao Quang
Hoang Chau Anh
Nguyen Hoang Nam
