Alaska Airlines temporarily suspends all flights

In a statement, Alaska Airlines said it has requested a system-wide suspension of Alaska and Horizon Air flights.

On July 20, the US airline Alaska Airlines requested to temporarily suspend all flights, after an “information technology incident” affected the airline’s system. This is the second time Alaska Airlines has had to temporarily suspend its fleet in just over a year.

In an announcement, Alaska Airlines said it experienced an IT problem at around 8:00 p.m. on July 20 (local time, or 10:00 a.m. on July 21, Vietnam time).

“We have ordered a system-wide suspension of Alaska and Horizon Air flights,” the announcement said.

The Seattle-based airline said there would be lasting impacts to its operations through the evening of July 20, but did not provide further details.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet commented on the above information. The FAA's news website shows that all destinations are affected by the grounding of Alaska and Horizon aircraft.

According to its website, Alaska Air Group maintains an active fleet of 238 Boeing 737s and 87 Embraer 175s.

Last June, Hawaiian Airlines, owned by Alaska Air Group, said some of its information technology systems were disrupted by a cyberattack. Alaska Air Group said it was still determining the financial impact of the cyberattack.

The Alaska Airlines incident comes as tech companies Google and Palo Alto Networks have warned that the "Scattered Spider" hacker group is targeting the aviation sector.

Also on July 20, Microsoft announced that there were "ongoing" attacks on its server software used by government agencies and businesses./.
