Effective and safe frog farming practices in Thailand.

Thai frogs have high economic value, but few people successfully raise them for two harvests per year.

For high income

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan's aquaculture farm in Zone 1, Ben Vua (Tien Lang commune), covers more than 2 hectares and raises various aquatic species. However, Mr. Thuan says that the model of raising Thai frogs for both breeding and commercial purposes is easier to cultivate and yields higher economic returns than other aquatic species. He usually raises commercial frogs and froglets during the summer season for sale to markets both within and outside the city.

The selling price of commercial frogs in the summer is 55,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. His family's farm typically raises 300,000 froglets and commercial frogs each year, earning a profit of approximately 300 million VND after deducting expenses, double that of other aquatic products…

The model of raising Thai frogs in cages in Mai Dong village (Tan An commune) by Mr. Doan Van Loan has a scale of 100,000 cages combined with raising squarehead tilapia in ponds. In 2025, he raised frogs in two staggered batches, each half month apart, and he only harvested all the frogs in the cages at the end of November.

According to Mr. Loan, raising frogs in cages is quite smooth and convenient if the water source is kept clean; the frogs do not get diseases and grow quickly. This year alone, 100,000 froglets yielded 5 tons of marketable frogs, bringing in a profit of over 200 million VND…

In 2025, the Hai Phong Agricultural Extension Center supported several farmers in Kien Thuy, Chan Hung, and Vinh An communes in piloting the raising of Thai frogs in cages combined with tilapia farming according to VietGAP standards. After 3 months, the frog population grew and developed well, with a survival rate of over 85%, an average weight of nearly 300 grams/frog, and a yield of nearly 33 kg/cage. With a scale of 780 /cage/hectare, each farmer could earn 250 million VND/season, much higher than conventional production.

Ms. Dang Thi Xoa from Kim Doi village (Kien Thuy commune) happily shared: “Raising frogs in cages helps my family make the most of the water surface area. Thanks to the technical guidance of agricultural extension officers throughout the breeding process, the risks are reduced, and the economic efficiency is higher compared to traditional methods. Raising Thai frogs clearly doesn't require a large investment but truly brings high economic efficiency, and the product is very easy to sell…”

Expanding the number of households raising livestock according to VietGAP standards.

Although frog farming in Thailand is highly profitable and the techniques are not difficult, in reality, most households only raise frogs for one summer crop. Frogs are typically raised from the beginning of the year and harvested between June and August. Some households may leave frogs for a longer harvest season, extending into October or November.

Due to the harvesting season for commercial frogs, there will be no Thai frogs available for sale on the market at the end of the year, especially during the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year). Therefore, the price of frogs at the end of the year is usually very high (nearly 100,000 VND/kg).

According to Mr. Vu Van Tang, an aquaculture farmer in An Khanh commune, raising frogs in the winter season faces many difficulties due to the cold weather, which slows down the frogs' growth. The frog breeds imported for the winter season also struggle to meet the farmers' requirements, and most households lack the necessary infrastructure to raise them during this season. Some households have boldly invested in building above-ground tanks, greenhouses, and net houses, but the harsh weather conditions in the North make raising Thai frogs in the winter ineffective.

In addition, the area of Thai frog farming households adhering to VietGAP standards is currently very small, mainly consisting of households implementing pilot models of projects supported by government agencies.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ba Khiem, a frog farmer in Thuy Hung village (Chan Hung commune), the market price of frogs is still low, not commensurate with the investment required to raise them according to VietGAP standards. Therefore, farmers are hesitant to expand their farming area according to these standards.

Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, an official from the Economic Department of Chan Hung commune, said that the locality has 300 households engaged in aquaculture. Among them, raising Thai frogs has proven effective, helping people increase their income. Therefore, the locality hopes that relevant agencies will create favorable conditions for local people to expand their farming area, especially towards safe farming models.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tai, a staff member of the Fisheries Extension Department (Hai Phong Agricultural Extension Center), said that agricultural extension officers both provide technical support to frog farmers and act as a bridge connecting producers with the market. From the beginning of the season, the center connects farmers with suppliers and supports the sale of their products. Frog products meeting VietGAP standards are sold through diverse channels, such as clean agricultural product chains, restaurants, and collective kitchens.

In the coming period, the Hai Phong Agricultural Extension Center will direct its specialized departments, stations, and experimental farms to develop plans to replicate the model in localities with suitable cultivation conditions.
