The North-South Expressway Eastern section project, phase 2021-2025, is being implemented in Ha Tinh province with a total length of over 102km. Of this, the Vung Ang – Bung section, over 55km long (12.9km through Ha Tinh and over 42km through Quang Binh ), is one of three component projects of this overall project. The project's starting point intersects National Highway 12C, connecting to the Ham Nghi – Vung Ang Expressway in Ky Tan commune, Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province, and the end point connects to the Bung – Van Ninh Expressway in Cu Nam commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province.

The image shows a section of road through Ba Vong hill (Ky Tan commune, Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province) included in package XL 01. Company 484 JSC – one of the five contractors undertaking the construction – has basically completed leveling the 60m-high hill. The 3km main route has been paved with C25 porous asphalt concrete.

Nearly 19 months after the groundbreaking ceremony, the Vung Ang – Bung expressway is gradually taking shape, with the main route constructed using cement-reinforced crushed stone base and a C25 porous asphalt concrete layer, along with many tunnels through mountains and bridges crossing forests and rivers.

Along the Vung Ang – Bung expressway, there are 33 bridges, including 28 bridges on the expressway and 5 bridges crossing the expressway. Bridges No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are critical items in the section passing through Ha Tinh province.

Bridge No. 1, nearly 1 km long, is designed with 2 abutments and 22 piers, the tallest of which reaches 50m, to connect two hills and span a basin-shaped valley in Ky Hoa commune, Ky Anh town. This bridge is being constructed by Hoa Binh 479 Joint Stock Company, which has already installed 6 out of 22 spans, achieving 55-60% completion.

The contractor prioritizes mobilizing a team of highly skilled and experienced engineers and workers to accelerate the progress of the project, especially the bridges and tunnels through the mountains.

Bridge No. 2 and Bridge No. 3, located along the Kim Son reservoir with a capacity of 17.5 million m3 in Ky Hoa commune, Ky Anh town, were constructed by Construction and Installation Company 368. Once operational, these two bridges will create a magnificent landscape along the expressway.

“The construction unit is working on three bridges, numbers 2, 3, and 5. After more than a year of construction, bridges number 2 and 5 have reached 90-95% completion, with only waterproofing and concrete paving remaining. Bridge number 3 is about 70% complete, with the substructure and foundation piers nearly finished. This bridge is behind schedule due to the addition of some design elements. It is expected that the mountain and lake overpass projects will be completed in November,” said Mr. Dao Van Cuong, Commander of 368 Joint Stock Company.

Meanwhile, Bridge No. 5 is an elevated bridge, crossing hills and mountains leading to the Deo But Tunnel – the only road tunnel on the North-South Expressway through Ha Tinh province. Bridge No. 5 has also completed over 90% of the work, ahead of schedule.

Bridge piers 30-50m high are used for bridges crossing hills and lakes.

On the sections with crushed stone and porous asphalt concrete, the contractor completed the slope reinforcement and planted grass to limit landslides.

The Deo But tunnel project is nearly 1km long, passing through Dong Nang mountain, the north belongs to Ky Lac commune (Ky Anh district), the south belongs to Ky Hoa commune (Ky Anh town). The project is designed to be permanent, reinforced concrete shell, with two separate tunnels, each 15m wide and 8m high. The contractor is currently focusing on the construction of the remaining tunnel.

Due to the unique characteristics of the Vung Ang – Bung expressway, which is near the Ngang Pass and close to the Hoanh Son mountain range, construction will be difficult during the rainy season. Therefore, taking advantage of the dry weather, contractors have mobilized manpower and machinery to simultaneously deploy construction teams, striving to accelerate progress, and prioritizing the handling of difficult and critical points.

"Despite the heat, we still try our best to work to meet the deadline. To avoid the harsh weather, we start work earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon," said worker Quang Van Thang (27 years old, residing in Nghe An province).

In response to the requirement for completion and handover by April 2025, the contractor is currently accelerating the progress of the Vung Ang – Bung project to achieve the set target.
