Which opponents will coach Kim Sang-sik face in the race for the hot seat of the Vietnamese national team?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/05/2024

Thanh Nien sources said that Mr. Kim Sang-sik will almost certainly become the coach of the Vietnam national team, replacing coach Philippe Troussier. In the fierce race, besides Mr. Kim Sang-sik, there are still 2 other strong candidates.
According to some sources, there are up to 3 candidates in the "final" of the selection of the head coach for the Vietnam team, to replace the position of coach Philippe Troussier. They are Mr. Kim Sang-sik (Korean), 1 Japanese candidate and 1 candidate with dual German and Brazilian nationality (most likely coach Mano Polking).

Prior to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officially announcing the new head coach for the national team (expected on May 3rd), the name Kim Sang-sik had been mentioned frequently in recent days, stemming from exclusive information from a South Korean media outlet. South Korean newspapers were among the foreign publications with the highest frequency of articles about the selection of a new coach for the Vietnamese national team in recent days. Meanwhile, Japanese, German, and Brazilian newspapers hardly mentioned any candidates from their respective countries. Even Thai newspapers, where Mano Polking previously worked and achieved success, did not mention the coach with dual German and Brazilian citizenship, despite Mano Polking's public declaration of his willingness to lead the Vietnamese national team. Initial assessments suggest that each of the three finalists has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, coach Mano Polking is the one who understands Southeast Asian football the most among the candidates, has specific achievements when leading a Southeast Asian team (winning the AFF Cup 2020 and 2022 with the Thai team), and has worked in Vietnam (leading Ho Chi Minh City Club from 2020 - 2021). But Mr. Mano Polking's salary may not be cheap. Mr. Mano Polking himself failed at the last minute when negotiating with the Hanoi Police Club earlier this year. Coach Kim Sang-sik has an advantage, having inherited the success of two compatriots who have worked with Vietnamese teams, including coach Park Hang-seo and coach Gong Oh-kyun (leading the Vietnam U.23 team at the 2022 U.23 Asian Cup). Meanwhile, the Japanese candidate comes from the largest football country in Asia, with the world's top discipline. According to sources, this candidate could be Mr. Nishino - former coach of the Thai team. Japanese coaches are also making their mark in the Thai teams (Coach Masatada Ishii) and Singapore (Coach Tsutomu Ogura). However, the failure of Japanese coach Toshiya Miura in the final stage of taking charge of the Vietnamese team in early 2016 may make the Vietnamese football world reconsider.
