On August 3rd, information from the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital indicated that the hospital had recently admitted and treated a 54-year-old female patient who had swallowed a large fish bone.
According to the information, a few days ago, Ms. LTT (residing in Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh province) accidentally choked on a fish bone after eating it and was taken to the hospital by her family in a state of pain and discomfort in her neck and difficulty swallowing.

Examination and CT scan results of the cervical spine revealed a foreign object in the esophagus. After consultation, the patient was scheduled for endoscopic removal. During the endoscopy, doctors discovered a sharp foreign object in the esophagus, approximately 20cm from the anterior dental arch, with abrasions on the esophageal mucosa. The foreign object, a piece of fish bone measuring approximately 2.5x3cm with many sharp edges, was successfully removed.
Dr. Do Quang Ut, Head of the Gastroenterology Department (Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital), said that foreign objects in the digestive tract during eating and drinking are often fish bones or other foreign objects such as toothpicks, bamboo, pill wrappers, etc.
Foreign objects often get stuck in the esophagus, making it very dangerous and requiring prompt emergency treatment; otherwise, it can lead to serious complications. To prevent esophageal foreign bodies or bones from getting stuck, people should develop the habit of eating slowly and chewing thoroughly; limit talking and joking while eating; and be careful with meats and fish that haven't had their bones removed, or sharp fruits with large seeds.
To avoid choking on bones, people should also take note of the following when preparing food: remove bones before eating, especially for children and the elderly; choose soft foods; and pay attention to what you eat.
