National online conference on polio prevention and control.

In response to Invitation No. 939/GM-BYT dated December 9, 2025, from the Ministry of Health, on December 12, 2025, the Nghe An Department of Health participated in the nationwide online conference on polio prevention and control chaired by the Ministry of Health. The conference was connected from the Ministry of Health's headquarters and chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, Deputy Minister of Health, with the participation of representatives from affiliated units.

At the Nghe An location, representatives from the Department of Health , the Provincial Center for Disease Control, the Health Centers under the Department, several hospitals, and key personnel responsible for disease prevention and control and expanded immunization programs were present.

In her opening remarks at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, Deputy Minister of Health, emphasized Vietnam's significant achievements in polio prevention and control over the past years. Thanks to the implementation of polio vaccination in the Expanded Immunization Program, with over 95% of children receiving the polio vaccine for many years, Vietnam has not recorded any cases of polio and was recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having eradicated polio nationwide in 2000.

However, given the complex developments of the polio epidemic in the region, the risk of polio virus entering Vietnam is very high and present. Specifically: Laos declared a nationwide polio epidemic on October 17, 2025, after recording one case positive for vaccine-derived polio virus type 1 (VDPV1) at the end of August, and two more positive cases from stool samples of healthy children at the beginning of October 2025.
