Accordingly, on November 15, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, Mr. Nezar Patria, said that the country plans to accelerate the development of the digital economy through the establishment of an "AI Center of Excellence" at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and possibly expand to other universities.

Mr. Patria made the statement at the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between state-owned telecommunications company Telkom Indonesia and UGM to develop the center at the university's Innovation and Creativity Zone (GIK).

“In Southeast Asia, the digital economy could reach $1 trillion by 2030, with Indonesia contributing 40 percent. The AI Center of Excellence will support this growth,” the Deputy Minister stressed.

With the largest population in the region, Indonesia is seen as a key driver for the expansion of the digital economy and the adoption of emerging technologies, including AI.

In addition, Mr. Patria commented that Indonesia is expected to contribute about 366 billion USD to the regional digital economy by 2030, while emphasizing the need to accelerate the application of AI to maintain competitiveness.

The center, developed in collaboration with stakeholders in academia and industry, aims to enhance research and innovation in AI fields and develop digital talent in higher education .

For his part, Telkom Indonesia's Director of Digital and Information Technology, Mr. Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi, said this collaboration will combine the university's research strengths with the needs of the industry.

Academic research supports long-term innovation, while industry drives commercialization, he noted.

The AI Center will act as a “connector and bridging” hub, helping to accelerate applied research and strengthen the innovation ecosystem within the university.
