In the latest Power On report by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly focusing on developing a significantly thinner smartphone for the iPhone 17 series launching in 2025.
A design concept for a future ultra-thin iPhone 17 model.
Explaining Apple's new direction, Gurman suggested that for many years, Apple seemed to be moving away from creating the thinnest and lightest devices possible. This is because devices like the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch Ultra are built with thicker designs to accommodate longer battery life, faster chips, and more features.
Nevertheless, the iPad Pro M4 marks a return to a thinner design, although the battery life per charge is still rated at around 10 hours like its predecessor, as well as very fast performance. This stems from several features such as the new M4 chip and OLED display. This shows that Apple has found a way to make its devices thinner while still adding important new features.
Gurman believes that Apple will skip the new design in the upcoming iPhone 16 series and apply it to the iPhone 17 series instead. Additionally, Apple also seems to want to adopt a thinner design for future MacBook Pro and Apple Watch models.
Regarding the iPhone 16 series, set to launch this September, a report from Tom's Guide suggests that the product won't have too many design changes. However, one potential upgrade is that the new models are expected to have thinner bezels around the screen. This stems from a new technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS), which will tightly wrap circuits together and reroute wiring to allow for a thinner bottom bezel. The current limitation is that manufacturing these screens will be more difficult, so Apple is likely to only apply the new technology to the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models.
