CNN, citing a statement from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, reported that the IDF launched Operation "Iron Sword" against the Hamas movement following a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group on Israeli territory in the early morning of October 7th.
The IDF also said that dozens of its fighter jets are currently attacking Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.
"To prevent Hamas rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip into Israel, the IDF is now striking enemy targets in the area," the IDF said in a statement on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Israel also declared a state of war alert on the morning of October 7th after the initial attacks took place.
Speaking about the current situation, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel "will win this war" against Hamas.
“Hamas made a grave mistake this morning and launched a war against the State of Israel. IDF soldiers are fighting the enemy everywhere. I urge all Israeli citizens to follow security guidelines. The State of Israel will win this war,” Minister Gallant said.
According to Israeli media, at least 100 people have been injured across Israel in the Hamas attacks. There is no official death toll yet.
Earlier on the morning of October 7th, Muhammad Al-Deif, commander of the military branch of the Hamas movement, stated that the group was launching an operation called "Operation Al-Aqsa Storm" targeting Israeli positions, airports, and military sites.
According to Muhammad Al-Deif, Hamas also launched at least 5,000 rockets into Israeli territory.
The military wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas, the Al-Qassam Brigades, has announced a campaign against Israel, claiming to have launched 5,000 rockets.
The escalating conflict between Hamas and Israel has raised concerns about the risk of a large-scale military confrontation similar to the 11-day war in the Gaza Strip in 2021 that killed hundreds of people.
