Room occupancy rates have increased sharply.
According to information from the Hanoi Department of Tourism , Hanoi currently has 3,760 accommodation establishments with 71,246 rooms. Specifically, there are 607 hotels and apartment complexes rated from 1 to 5 stars, with a total of 26,641 rooms. Since the beginning of the year, the number of tourists visiting and staying in Hanoi has increased. Specifically, in May 2024, the average room occupancy rate for hotels reached 64.7%, an increase of 1.0% compared to the same period in 2023.
In the first six months of the year, the average hotel occupancy rate is expected to reach 63.9%, an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2023. Several 4-5 star hotels in central Hanoi , such as Melia, Sheraton, Hilton Opera, etc., have welcomed many business groups participating in MICE tourism.

Mr. Nguyen Tat Thanh, manager of Sunlight Hotel (18 Bao Khanh Street, Hoan Kiem District), said that the number of guests staying at hotels in the Old Quarter has been steadily increasing each month. Currently, the average room occupancy rate of Sunlight Hotel is about 50-60%, and on weekends it can reach 90-100%.
In suburban areas, high-end resorts such as Lang Mit, Glory Resort (Son Tay), Asean Resort (Thach That); Medi Thien Son, Paragon Resort (Ba Vi)... have a stable number of guests. Do Van Tien, manager of Glory Resort, reported that the room occupancy rate on weekends reaches about 80-90%, and at many times guests have to book in advance because all rooms are booked.
Discounts to stimulate tourism.
To attract tourists during the summer and autumn of 2024 and the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10th), the Hanoi Department of Tourism is organizing a promotional program for Hanoi residents and tourists to experience services at 4-5 star hotels in the capital city.

At a conference organized by the Hanoi Department of Tourism to stimulate tourism and encourage visitors to experience services at 4-5 star hotels, Deputy Director Nguyen Hong Minh stated that the program focuses on stimulating demand and attracting tourists and Hanoi residents to experience staying at and using services at 4-5 star hotels in Hanoi. Accommodation establishments will launch tourism programs and packages during the off-season to stimulate demand and attract tourists to stay regularly and for extended periods.
"Hanoi is a leading market for sending tourists throughout the country and abroad. However, many Hanoians haven't taken the time to learn about the capital city where they live, nor have they tried experiencing local tourism. The capital will soon be organizing many activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi, which is an opportunity for accommodation establishments to welcome and retain guests for longer stays and higher spending. This will affirm that Hanoi tourism is safe, friendly, high-quality, and attractive," Mr. Minh stated.
In response to the program, many 4-5 star hotels have developed promotional programs to attract tourists, especially residents of the capital city. Nguyen Thanh Thuy, Business Director of the Silk Path hotel chain, said: "Located on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake, Silk Path hotels target families, especially during children's summer vacation. Therefore, the hotel offers a 15% discount, allows early check-in at 10 am and late check-out at 2 pm, giving guests more time to enjoy their stay."

Similarly, the Pan Pacific Hanoi Hotel also offers summer promotions, such as a free upgrade to the next room category (applicable for stays of 3 nights or more), a welcome drink voucher at the Song Hong Bar, and a 15% discount on hotel food and beverage services. In addition, guests who book 30 days in advance of their check-in date will receive a 10% discount on room rates.
According to Le Kim Thu, Director of Sales and Marketing at Movenpick Living West Hanoi, from now until October 10, 2024, the hotel is offering a "Happy Summer Vacation" package with preferential prices, including a free upgrade to a Suite room and free late check-out until 2 PM. JW Marriott Hanoi is also offering a summer promotion for families at VND 4.5 million per night, including services such as breakfast and afternoon tea.
In the outskirts of Hanoi, many luxury accommodations are also offering promotional programs for the summer. Hoang Van Phuong, manager of Melia Ba Vi resort, said that the resort is implementing a policy allowing guests to experience various sightseeing activities, especially camping and team-building, for free. Meanwhile, Glory Resort (Son Tay) is offering discounts on certain days to encourage guests to stay longer.

Although hotels have offered discounted room rates, tourism experts believe that to attract tourists, Hanoi needs more experiential tourism products in addition to discounts, thereby encouraging visitors to stay longer.
According to Nguyen Manh Than, Chairman of the Hanoi Tourism Association, tourism businesses need to improve the quality of tourism products and organize more events to attract tourists. In addition, they need to strengthen promotional activities to affirm Hanoi's position as a major tourist transit gateway for the whole country.
From the perspective of travel businesses, Pham Van Bay, Deputy Director of Vietravel, believes that to attract tourists to stay longer and spend more, there needs to be close cooperation between airlines, hotels, travel agencies, and destinations to create tourism products with competitive prices and attractive incentives. Hotels need to provide updated and accurate information and preferential policies for travel agencies.
