Design

The inspiration behind the FreeBuds 5's design comes from the glassmaking process , with tempered glass particles at the earbud tips providing exceptional rigidity and impact resistance. As a result, the FreeBuds 5 stands out from other recently released in-ear headphones.

FreeBuds 5 have a unique design.

Thanks to data simulation of hundreds of ear shapes during the design process , Huawei has fine-tuned the FreeBuds 5 to ensure a perfect fit in the ear. Users are provided with two different sizes of silicone tips in the box to optimize ear fit, allowing the earbuds to be placed outside the ear canal without having to press into the ear like most other wireless earbuds.

The charging case has a pebble-like shape and provides a secure closing mechanism with a single click. The bottom of the case features a USB-C port. Each earbud weighs approximately 5.4 grams, while the charging case weighs 45 grams.

Features

The FreeBuds 5 offer dual 11mm magnetic dynamic drivers with a claimed frequency response of 16 Hz to 40 kHz . The earbuds connect via Bluetooth 5.2 and support dual connection to two devices, as well as a sensor that detects removal of the earbuds to automatically pause and resume playback of multimedia content.

The earbuds support the high-bitrate LDAC codec as well as Huawei's L2HC 2.0 codec , and are promised to be 30% more responsive than the FreeBuds 4. The earbuds offer an adaptive equalizer that can be fine-tuned in the Huawei AI Life app. This companion app also allows users to toggle all sorts of features on the headphones, as well as the Find My Headphones feature, which plays a loud ringtone if the user puts the wrong earbud in.

The Huawei AI Life companion app is useful when paired with FreeBuds 5.

With three microphones located on each earbud, the FreeBuds 5 can powerfully cancel out noise (ANC) through a feature called Open Fit ANC 3.0. It also supports AI-powered call noise cancellation, isolating the user's voice in busy environments. Another interesting feature is the built-in infrared sensors next to the drivers that scan the ear and adjust the sound output based on the fit.

The touch controls are programmable with single-tap and double-tap controls , as well as swipe up and down for volume control. The charging case supports both wired and wireless charging. Meanwhile, the earbuds are IP54 dust and water resistant, while the case offers no protection.

Performance and sound quality

FreeBuds 5 deliver good sound quality , especially excellent bass performance. It's been fine-tuned by Huawei to provide a better overall experience across different music genres. The default EQ profile is a bit flat, but the bass boost mode offers the best experience among the presets. Users can customize the sound profile to their liking in the Huawei AI Life app and save up to three presets.

Initial experience suggests that FreeBuds 5 offer fairly good touch control accuracy , and also feature convenient volume controls when not using your phone. The ANC feature only works to moderately isolate sound.

Performance and sound quality indicators are good.

The connection strength is generally stable, even when switching between devices, with a range of up to 10 meters. Dual pairing works well, although there are occasional seconds lost during the transition between the phone and laptop. There is a noticeable lag when watching videos on the laptop, but this is common among wireless headphones and they perform better when connected to a phone. FreeBuds 5 work well for calls inside the house.

Battery life

Tests with the FreeBuds 5 show that the 42 mAh battery in the earbuds can last for 4.5 hours with ANC off and over 3 hours with ANC on. Users can recharge the battery up to 5 times via the charging case, which has a built-in 505 mAh battery. Charging both the earbuds and the case takes approximately 40 minutes via cable and over 4 hours via wireless charging.
