Urgently overcome the consequences of floods and prepare for the new school year

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Storm No. 5 and subsequent floods caused many schools in mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa province to have their roofs blown off, landslides, and flooding... To prepare for the new school year, schools are mobilizing human resources to coordinate with local authorities and functional forces to urgently overcome damage, clean up and sanitize classrooms, prevent epidemics... to welcome students back to school as planned.

Due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, the border commune of Tam Thanh suffered serious damage to infrastructure, people's lives and especially educational facilities in the area were severely affected.

Hundreds of cubic meters of rocks, tree roots, and trash from the hills have been dumped into classrooms, yards, and gates of two kindergartens and primary schools in Cha Lung village, Tam Thanh commune, directly threatening the safety of the structures. The main area of ​​Tam Thanh Kindergarten is also facing the risk of insecurity due to the deterioration of the wall foundation and electric pole system.

Ms. Ngan Thi Thuong, Principal of Tam Thanh Kindergarten, Tam Thanh Commune, said: "In the past few days, with the support of the police force, border guards, militia, union members, local youth and school teachers, we have cleared rocks and soil, dredged mud in classrooms and the school yard. The school is cleaning classrooms and redecorating the school to get ready for the new school year."

In the border commune of Yen Khuong, heavy rain also caused severe damage to facilities and schools.

Xang Hang village school, part of Yen Khuong Primary School, had many items severely damaged. The surrounding wall collapsed, the school yard was buried in rocks and soil, and teaching equipment was swept away.

Many classrooms have sunk, the floor tiles are cracked; two classrooms being used as offices are also seriously damaged, not ensuring working conditions. The teachers' housing area is flooded, rocks and soil have flooded in, damaging many household items. The school yard is covered with nearly 100 cubic ^{meters of} rocks and soil, seriously hindering the organization of teaching and learning.

Storm No. 5 made landfall, causing all the rooms and classrooms of Thiet Ong Kindergarten, Thiet Ong Commune to be deeply flooded. All the classroom decorations were damaged and swept away.

Teacher Trinh Thi Tan, Principal of Thiet Ong Kindergarten, said: "Although there was a plan, because the flood water came too quickly, the school could only "run" some electronic devices and kitchen equipment, the rest of the tables, chairs, and teaching aids were submerged in water. The school's Board of Directors actively coordinated with the authorities and functional forces to clean up mud and dirt; coordinated with the Medical Center to spray disinfectant; took advantage of the sunny weather to organize washing and drying of blankets, toys, equipment... Actively preparing conditions for students to have the most meaningful first day of school."

At Nam Xuan Kindergarten, Nam Xuan Commune, Storm No. 5 blew off the roof of the classroom block at Nam Tan branch. The entire truss system was severely damaged by termites and rotten, the corrugated iron roof was punctured, the screws in the wood were loose, and the classrooms were leaking, the walls were soaked, and moldy.

Teacher Do Thi Hong, Principal of Nam Xuan Kindergarten, said: Due to the nature of the school in the mountainous area, the storm brought a large amount of mud and soil into the school grounds. The school is mobilizing all teachers to clean and sanitize the school and classrooms... and prepare the necessary conditions for the opening of the new school year. At the same time, the Nam Xuan Commune People's Committee has reported to have a plan to renovate the school in time to welcome students back to school.

As of August 31, 33 schools in the province were damaged and deeply flooded, seriously affecting preparations for the new school year. In addition, many educational facilities are still isolated, making it difficult to inspect, assess damage and develop a plan for recovery.

The education sector of Thanh Hoa province is focusing on coordinating with localities and functional units, making efforts to overcome damage at schools to ensure safety and the best conditions for the opening ceremony as well as teaching and learning activities in the new school year 2025-2026.
