Excited about the price of the stream

People are excited to harvest when bamboo prices are good.

Along Highway 217 through the communes of Trung Ha, Son Dien, Muong Min..., bundles of bamboo still wet with dew are pulled and released by people from the hills. At the foot of the slope, on the roadside, groups of people are diligently stripping bamboo and bundling products to deliver them to purchasing and processing facilities in time. The production pace is much more bustling than at the beginning of the year.

Ms. Vi Thi Huan, Che village, Trung Ha commune, said: “At this time, the price of forest products is high, making people happy and more motivated to take advantage of every sunny day to go to the forest to harvest. Hopefully, the price will remain stable so that people in the area can have a full Tet Binh Ngo 2026.”

Sharing the same sentiment, Mr. Ha Van Man's family in Din village, Trung Ha commune went into the forest at dawn. Mr. Man shared: "While the price is good, people are taking advantage of the situation. We sell as soon as we harvest."

According to Mr. Man, there are many forest product processing enterprises operating in the area, so the purchasing unit purchases directly, and the delivery process is convenient. Currently, the price of bamboo fluctuates at 15,000-16,000 VND/kg, much higher than last year.

Not only bamboo, the price of bamboo and rattan has also increased sharply at present. In Na Nghiu village, Son Dien commune, Mr. Luong Van Phich said that since the beginning of the year, the biological "dying" phenomenon has caused a large area of bamboo and rattan to decrease; in addition, continuous rain and storms have interrupted the harvest. The sharp decrease in supply is the main reason for the sudden increase in prices of these products.

“There was a time when the price of bamboo reached 19,000 VND/kg; and that of reed and bamboo reached 280,000 VND/quintal. Traders came to place orders continuously, and sometimes there was not enough output to meet the demand, especially at the end of this year,” said Mr. Phich.

People of Na Nghiu village, Son Dien commune actively split bamboo.

According to local people, a skilled worker can earn up to a million dong a day from harvesting, stripping, and bundling bamboo. This is an important source of income that helps many households ease their difficulties after the storm.

In the processing sector, Mr. Le Duc Thien, owner of Thien Hao incense stick production facility (Son Dien commune) said: Facilities in the region are currently cooperating to purchase raw materials from people, pre-process and then supply raw products to businesses in and outside the province, continuing to process refined products for export. “The increase in raw material prices is a good sign for people, but businesses also face challenges. Increased input costs lead to increased production costs, forcing the selling price of raw products to be adjusted. Businesses must balance to maintain orders,” Mr. Thien analyzed.

As a locality with a large area of bamboo, rattan, and bamboo, Son Dien commune currently owns more than 4,000 hectares of forestry land growing these trees. Chairman of the commune People's Committee, Mr. Pham Van Tinh said: Thanks to the stable income from bamboo, rattan, and bamboo, people's lives have improved significantly over the past many years. The rate of poor and near-poor households has decreased over the years; many families have the conditions to reinvest in expanding the area or renovating the forest to increase productivity.

“Bamboo, reed, and bamboo are fast-growing plants, suitable for the local climate and soil, and easy to sell. This is an important advantage for sustainable forestry economic development. When prices increase, it will have a positive impact on the income of thousands of households,” said Mr. Tinh.

Statistics in communes of Quan Son district (old) show that the whole area currently has about 54,000 hectares of bamboo, rattan, and reed forests, concentrated in Son Dien, Muong Min, Tam Lu, Tam Thanh, Son Thuy, Na Meo... About 60 forest product processing and trading establishments are operating, creating regular jobs for hundreds of workers.

Every year, the locality exploits and consumes from 5,000 to 7,000 tons of bamboo and rattan in the form of strips. The large volume and stable supply have helped form a sustainable production - processing - consumption chain, creating an important driving force for forest economic development.
