When artists get into trouble over their attitude: A stumble to look back at themselves?

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí14/09/2023

The line between love and hate is just... a sentence

Hoang Thuy Linh started this year with a series of overwhelming victories at the Blue Wave Awards. At that time, the female singer received many compliments for her bravery and journey of overcoming difficulties to reach the peak of her career.

However, everything suddenly turned around after she held a press conference on September 6 in Ho Chi Minh City to introduce her first live concert after 15 years of singing.

The "off-topic" answers, even "twisting" the reporter at the press conference made Hoang Thuy Linh the center of controversy on social networks. In just a moment, the image of the female singer loved by many people suddenly collapsed.

Many people criticized, saying that Hoang Thuy Linh "behaved poorly", had an "arrogant" attitude... Some audiences were confused, asking why the female singer had such a confusing, off-topic, and even somewhat argumentative response with the media at the press conference.

Hoang Thuy Linh's "slip" in behavior reminded many people of similar cases in the past of Vietnamese artists. Many famous people have been turned away by public opinion because of "slip of the tongue" and inappropriate statements.

Dong Nhi is a typical case. Having been active in the arts for more than 15 years and having a large number of loyal fans, in July 2022, she "poured cold water" on her fans with harsh statements.

Although Dong Nhi has apologized, this incident is still often mentioned as the biggest scandal in the singer's career.

In February, "O Sen" Ngoc Mai - the champion of the first season of Mask Singer - also became the focus of criticism, losing the audience's sympathy because of a series of unrestrained statements, which were considered to be preaching morality through interviews with the press.

It can be seen that the boundary from "love" to "hate" of the audience is sometimes just... a sentence that the artist utters. Even if the reason behind that sentence is a momentary temper or many other reasons, it is clear that the artist's attitude and lack of modesty only makes them... lose their lives.

Professional artist behavior - difficult or easy?

Many people believe that the common point of these "slips of the tongue" is that the artists are emotional and lack self-control. On social media, many comments are dismayed by the amateurish behavior in the entertainment industry today. Audiences even question the "illusion of power" of celebrities.

Producer and musician Nguyen Ha shared with Dan Tri reporter: "As society in general and the entertainment industry in particular develop more and more, today's artists also need to think about taking care of their communication and behavior skills in a more professional direction.

Professionalism here means paying attention to small details. For example, when artists hold a press conference, they should communicate with journalists using their professional titles, which shows respect for each person's position."

Musician Nguyen Ha also shared a story he witnessed when he attended singer Bi Rain's press conference in Ho Chi Minh City in May 2006. That day, the Korean star arrived nearly an hour late, making reporters wait in an uncomfortable atmosphere.

During the press conference, the reporter frankly asked Bi Rain: "You don't sing well, you dance just fine, you're not handsome, so why do you think you're so famous?"

"Bi Rain sat listening to the translation, his expression unchanged and he slowly replied: "Thank you for asking. Because I know myself like that, I always try to practice to sing better and dance better. Maybe because the audience loves my efforts, I became famous. And tomorrow night, I will also try my best to sing well and dance beautifully to serve the Vietnamese audience."

I was overwhelmed by the direct and positive answer to the question "adversity". From that, I learned a lesson, always imagine difficult situations and prepare answers. That helps me always keep communication positive and cheerful", the musician recounted.

"In the past, being noisy meant being in demand, but now it's different!"

Speaking with Dan Tri reporter, media expert Nguyen Ngoc Long said that through the case of Hoang Thuy Linh and some previous Vietnamese stars, the culture of behavior in the entertainment industry needs to be taken seriously.

"Artists are public figures, which means that when you have a halo, stand on a high platform, and attract attention, of course there will be hundreds of thousands of people below the stage following you. They look at your clothes, your behavior, your gestures, and scrutinize your words and speech," the expert said.

Mr. Long believes that because artists are always the center of attention, when they get into trouble, they will also receive some benefits and lessons.

"It is easy to see that in any scandal, artists are always noticed by the media. In terms of benefits, that will be a condition for them to heat up their names and gain public attention. Besides, if they see their failures as an opportunity to look back at themselves, that is very good.

However, not everyone can see those falls as opportunities to rise up. In fact, artists "lose" a lot in this case," the media expert said.

Mr. Long believes that the story "the mouth harms the body" will directly affect the work of artists.

Experts say: "If an artist represents a brand, they will get into trouble, because the contract with the brand always has terms related to image maintenance. They can also lose shows and opportunities to participate in big programs. Worse, the artist will be turned away by their own fans.

In addition, I think people in the industry will also be more cautious when working with scandalous artists. Times are not like they used to be. In the past, being famous meant being in demand, but now scandals make people wary."

Mr. Long believes that when artists have a "poor" attitude, the path for them to regain public sympathy is not easy because the public is increasingly stricter and more "powerful".

"Audiences today do not easily forgive artists who encounter controversy over their attitudes. Therefore, artists need to see those failures as opportunities to reflect and change.

They need to find the root cause of the problem, learn lessons and actively communicate to the audience how they have corrected their mistakes. Keeping quiet and then suddenly appearing will not be effective, because the audience is no longer naive," the expert added.

Artists need professional representation

Speaking further with Dan Tri reporter, expert Nguyen Ngoc Long said that there are many things that artists must do to improve their communication and behavior.

"Most importantly, artists should have a spokesperson for themselves. That shows professionalism. Because no matter how good an artist is at speaking, they are still... artists, not media experts.

There are many people who are too confident in their communication skills, which makes them fall into traps and make mistakes. Huong Giang Idol, "O Sen" Ngoc Mai are examples of people who let their words "go too far". Artists should only do their proper role.

A typical case I admire is Dan Truong. All his statements are made through his manager. If there is any trouble, Dan Truong's representative will take responsibility. This is a very professional way of doing things," said Mr. Long.
