At dawn, the villagers performed a ritual offering at the shrine of Co Bac, followed by a fishing prayer ceremony - a welcoming of the deity at Bai Bac beach, offering prayers at the whale's grave (at the whale cemetery), performing traditional folk songs, and offering prayers at the ancestral shrine. After the ceremonies, the fishermen held a New Year's gathering, exchanging good wishes and preparing for the new fishing season.
The fishing festival is a deeply rooted cultural tradition of the coastal fishing village residents, celebrated every time Tet (Lunar New Year) arrives. Prior to this, on February 16th (the 19th day of the first lunar month), Thuan An village held a ceremony to worship at the shrine of Lady Ngoc on Ban Than mountain and a basket boat racing competition.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tho, Secretary of the Thuan An Village Party Branch, the fishing festival in Thuan An fishing village has a long history. The village has a cemetery for whales with over 500 graves. Not only local fishermen but also those who live far from home always look forward to the festival to pray for favorable weather, prosperity, and happiness for the villagers.
