Tran Quyet Chien accepted an invitation to participate in a friendly 3-cushion carom billiards tournament organized by the China Billiards and Snooker Federation (CBSA) in Shanghai. On the first day of competition (September 23), the match between Tran Quyet Chien and Dick Jaspers was broadcast live on television, featuring images of the "nine-dash line" (also known as the U-shaped line in the South China Sea). Upon learning of this and discussing it with coach Nguyen Viet Hoa by phone, the top Vietnamese player withdrew from the tournament and returned to Vietnam immediately without giving a specific reason to the organizers, thus demonstrating a firm stance against the promotion of images that violate Vietnam's maritime sovereignty.
