Important vitamin for bones, children are prone to deficiency at "eating age, growing age"

Vitamin K2 is one of the important micronutrients that is still not given due attention in the community. With the role of coordinating the process of calcium use in the body, vitamin K2 plays an important role in the formation of bone structure, protecting blood vessels and preventing mineral metabolism disorders.

This is information provided by Dr. Truong Hong Son - Director of Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine.

Dr. Son cited a recent study in China that showed that vitamin K2 is an independent factor associated with the risk of stunting. In addition, Dr. Son also emphasized that the research results showed that children in the growing age group are the group of children with the highest risk of vitamin K2 deficiency.

Vitamin K2 helps activate vitamin K-dependent proteins, especially osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein (MGP). Osteocalcin helps bind calcium to bones, while MGP prevents calcium from being deposited in soft tissues such as blood vessel walls.

Because of this dual role, vitamin K2 is seen as an intermediary factor that ensures calcium is “taken to the right place” – that is, into the bones and out of unwanted tissues.

Vitamin K2 is found in some animal products and fermented foods, such as some cheeses, milk, egg yolks, animal liver, red meat...

The Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine also warned that vitamin D deficiency in children in Vietnam is still common, and has had a negative impact on children's height development . A 2022 study in Southeast Asian countries (including Vietnam) showed that more than 50% of infants are vitamin D deficient.
