The double benefits of digital transformation in healthcare.

Simple, quick, and accurate procedures are the benefits that the application of digital transformation brings to the process of medical examination and treatment at hospitals in the province today.

At Phu Yen General Hospital, patients do not need to present their health insurance cards when registering for medical examinations and treatment. During diagnostic imaging procedures, patients also do not need to bring their X-ray or ultrasound records. All information is transmitted to each department and stored using QR codes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh (Tuy Hoa ward), who visited Phu Yen General Hospital for a check-up, shared: “Not having to carry documents helps patients and their families avoid worrying about forgetting or losing papers during travel and examinations. Patient information stored in the system also helps me get follow-up appointments and medication more quickly.”

Dr. Bui Anh Hoa, Deputy Director of Phu Yen General Hospital, said: "Every day, Phu Yen General Hospital examines and treats nearly 1,000 inpatients, not including thousands of outpatients. The large amount of information means that digital transformation saves time for both the hospital and patients. Storing data using QR codes also helps higher-level hospitals understand the patient's medical history and medications used, leading to more effective treatment."

Not only Phu Yen General Hospital, but many other hospitals in the province are also applying digital transformation, bringing convenience to patients. Mr. Pham Thanh Phong (Binh Kien ward), who came for a follow-up examination at Phu Yen Eye Hospital, shared: “My eyesight is not good, so every time I go for a check-up, my children and grandchildren have to come along to help carry the necessary documents and complete the procedures. Since the hospital implemented electronic medical records, I can go to the hospital alone, then be guided to get a number automatically, use my fingerprint to scan the examination results without having to bring any documents. After the examination, I just need to call home and my children will transfer the payment.”

At the Cardiology and Geriatrics Department of Phu Yen General Hospital, doctors previously had to wait for patients to bring in images before they could examine and diagnose patients. Now, immediately after receiving clinical images, the Diagnostic Imaging Department sends them directly to the storage system. Doctors in the Cardiology and Geriatrics Department, as well as other departments, only need to download, analyze, and determine the appropriate treatment.

Patient information is integrated directly into the computer system during the examination and treatment process.

Dr. Pham Xuan Anh (Department of Cardiology - Geriatrics) said: “Digital software is a great help to doctors in the process of examining and diagnosing diseases. Previously, we spent a lot of time asking patients what medications they were taking, what reactions they had to medications… With X-ray images, patients often didn't keep them, so sometimes we had to start the process all over again. Now, with the software, doctors only need to look up the patient's medical history, as well as compare the database on how the disease has progressed. From there, they can make decisions early on whether to apply the old treatment protocol or switch to a new one.”

At the Electrocardiogram (ECG) Department of Phu Yen Eye Hospital, after examination, patients receive their results directly into the computer software without the need for re-scanning as before. To print the ECG chart, doctors simply scan the patient's code using the scanner located nearby.

According to Dr. Huynh Phuc Nhi, Director of Phu Yen Eye Hospital, not only the Electrocardiography Department, but also other departments and wards at the hospital are applying digital transformation synchronously. This has great significance for the hospital in particular and the healthcare sector in general in providing healthcare services to the people and optimizing examination and treatment procedures. Both patients and medical staff benefit from the digital transformation of healthcare, not only saving time but, most importantly, providing faster and more accurate diagnostic results from stored information about the patient's treatment process.
