Regarding the controversial literature exam, Ms. Tran Thi Bich Chau, head of the literature department at Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City, stated that it was a midterm literature exam for students in class 10A25 of the school, not for all 10th-grade students.
The test question was "Write an argumentative essay discussing the superficial lifestyle of today's youth," with a time limit of 45 minutes.
"This is a periodic test conducted at the class level, with questions set by the subject teacher based on the consensus of the subject group (Ms. Chau does not directly teach Literature in class 10A25 - PV) ."
"The prompt requires writing an argumentative essay discussing a problem (a phenomenon in life or a problem related to young people); the prompt doesn't use text but rather employs reasoning and evidence to discuss and clarify a social issue," Ms. Chau said.
According to Ms. Chau, the exam ensures the content of the 10th-grade Literature curriculum. Regarding the 45-minute time limit, she explained that students had been guided to recognize the requirements of a social commentary essay on a social issue. They had also been guided to practice applying argumentative techniques in their writing, appropriate to the time allotted.
In addition, students are also guided on how to express themselves concisely, present their ideas clearly, and provide appropriate reasoning and evidence as required by the assignment.
In terms of content, the teachers guided students to identify the practical significance of the issues, including the issue of a superficial lifestyle. Specifically, in the writing lesson, the teachers had students practice writing skills and present the social issues they had researched.
During the speaking and listening lesson, the teacher also guided students in group presentations and provided feedback to help them: correctly understand the issue, have appropriate attitudes and solutions; express their understanding and stance on right/wrong, good/bad expressions; know how to leverage strengths and overcome weaknesses in their perspective on social issues; have an objective view, focusing on positive and good things in life…
"Tenth-grade students at Mac Dinh Chi School also learn about the topic 'Building a life perspective' through experiential learning and career guidance. This topic also contributes to supplementing students' social knowledge for writing argumentative essays," Ms. Chau added.
The question needs clarification on what 'tarpaulin' means.
On October 29th, a mid-term literature exam for 10th-grade students at Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City, went viral on social media.
Accordingly, the mid-term literature exam for 10th-grade students in the 2024-2025 school year at the school only has one question: "Write an argumentative essay discussing the superficial lifestyle of young people today."
On social networks, many people praised the above essay as being very good, catching the "hot trend" of young people.
However, experts have differing opinions. Some teachers argue that "pretending" is colloquial language, and in this case, students should understand it figuratively, not literally.
In reality, not all students understand that the term "showy lifestyle" refers to a pretentious, superficial, dishonest, or deceitful way of life. Therefore, the exam needs to clearly explain what "showy lifestyle" means to meet the criteria of clarity and prevent students from misunderstanding the question.
