Literature is the wellspring that nourishes humanism.

On this occasion, many guests also shared their opinions on the profound connection between medicine and literature. According to Professor Bui Duc Phu, former Director of Hue Central Hospital, literature teaches us stillness, sensitivity, and patience, which in turn teaches doctors respect, listening, and understanding of patients.

Professor Bui Duc Phu believes that literature and art also helped him overcome sleepless nights due to professional pressure, reflect on himself, and wash away the sadness of work to relieve stress. Literature also nurtures intellect and professional ethics.

Mr. Phu concluded: "Being a good doctor is not enough; one must also know how to respect, empathize with, and maintain dignity. Scientific medicine demands accuracy, but the heart of medicine demands humanity. Therefore, literature and art are the wellsprings that nurture that humanity."

At the seminar, traditional medicine practitioner and poet Le Viet Hoa also stated that this is a useful and meaningful issue for two particularly important fields in social life. Although each approach and solution to the problem takes a different form, both literature and medicine directly address human beings in the healing of both mind and body.

Mr. Hoa also referred to renowned traditional physicians such as Tue Tinh, Hai Thuong Lan Ong, and the patriotic poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu, pointing out a readily apparent commonality: "Before becoming doctors, they were poets and writers. They used literature as a foundation for exploring, learning, and researching medicine through experimentation."

The poet also refers to the work "Vietnamese Medicinal Plants and Herbs" by the late Professor-Doctor Do Tat Loi, a monumental scientific work on medicinal plants and their properties, contributing to the integration of traditional and Western medicine in treatment regimens.

"Both literature and medicine take humanity as their central focus, with the goal of humanism pervading their activities. Important elements that are always mentioned are conscience, responsibility, ethics, and honor. These are among the crucial criteria in the Ten Oaths of Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine, and are reflected in the saying of the poet and physician Nguyen Dinh Chieu, 'Better to be blind than to uphold one's family's principles,'" poet Le Viet Hoa observes.
