US President Joe Biden has announced an investigation into the national security risks posed by Chinese technology in automobiles, warning that it could be used to collect sensitive information, according to AFP on March 1.

China reacted angrily, criticizing the investigation as discriminatory and accusing the US of "weaponizing" trade issues.

Biden directed the Commerce Department to conduct an investigation, focusing on connected vehicles containing technology from "countries of concern" such as China, in order to respond to threats.

"China is determined to dominate the future of the auto market, including through unfair practices. China's policies could lead to their vehicles flooding our markets, posing a risk to our national security," according to a statement from the U.S. President.

The US is working to reduce its automotive industry's dependence on China, the world's second-largest economy . The US has introduced tax breaks for domestically produced electric vehicles and batteries, and is attempting to build domestic manufacturing capacity.

The latest move involves vehicles constantly connecting with personal devices, other cars, U.S. infrastructure, and their manufacturers, including electric and self-driving cars.

The White House said that connected vehicles collect vast amounts of data on drivers and passengers, log information about U.S. infrastructure through cameras and sensors, and can be controlled or disabled remotely.

"New vulnerabilities" could arise if foreign governments gain access to their systems or data, according to the White House.

During the investigation, the U.S. Department of Commerce will gather information, with a 60-day public comment period. Authorities may then impose restrictions on certain transactions, but officials have not yet given a timeframe.

Chinese Embassy spokesman Liu Bangyu said that China "resolutely opposes" the US generalization of national security and the "weaponization" of economic and trade issues.
