On January 16th, Dr. Truong Minh Hieu, Head of the Endoscopy Department at Xuyen A Long An General Hospital, stated that during an endoscopy, doctors discovered a foreign object in patient C.'s abdomen: a bottle cap approximately 30 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick.
According to Mr. C.'s account, when he was about fifteen years old, he accidentally swallowed a bottle cap (he doesn't remember what kind of bottle it was), and since he didn't experience any unusual symptoms afterwards, he didn't seek medical attention. It wasn't until recently, when he experienced frequent stomach pain and constipation, that his family took him to the hospital for a check-up.
Endoscopic images revealed a foreign object that had been left in the stomach for many years.
After the doctor removed the foreign object, Mr. C. experienced a reduction in his discomfort and was discharged from the hospital the same day.
According to Doctor Hieu, this is the longest-lasting case of a foreign object remaining in the stomach that the hospital has ever received. Foreign objects in the stomach sometimes cause no symptoms or only nausea and epigastric pain, so we often ignore them until more severe symptoms appear before seeking medical attention. At this point, the foreign object can cause scratches, even tears and infections in the digestive tract.
"To prevent gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion, it's important for people to be careful while eating, chew thoroughly, and avoid eating too quickly... As soon as suspicious symptoms appear, they should immediately go to a medical facility for examination and appropriate treatment," Dr. Hieu advised.
