Valentine's Day: Roses are on sale in abundance, sellers are waiting for customers to buy

As a flower symbolizing love, roses are sold everywhere on Valentine’s Day. However, according to many flower traders, business is quite slow.

On Valentine's Day, popular shopping areas in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Ho Thi Ky Market (District 10) and Nguyen Van Cu Street (District 5), are filled with flowers. The majority are roses, from fresh flowers to artificial ones arranged into beautiful heart shapes.

Large bouquets of flowers arranged in heart shapes, decorated with words like "Love," "my dear wife," etc., are being sold along Nguyen Van Cu Street (District 5).

Observations on Nguyen Van Cu street this morning showed a wide variety of Valentine's Day gifts on display, such as flowers, teddy bears, and chocolates. However, the flower stalls were experiencing slow business, with more sellers than customers.

While rearranging bouquets to attract customers, Vo Minh Thien, originally from Dong Nai province and running a flower business on Nguyen Van Cu street, said that business this Valentine's Day has been quite slow, not as good as in previous years.

“The prices of flowers here range from a few tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand dong. Customers mainly choose bouquets priced at around 200,000 - 300,000 dong. Today the weather is gloomy, so I'm quite worried because if it rains, I won't be able to sell anything. I've only sold to a few people since this morning. I think it's a weekday, so everyone's at work, which is why it's so quiet. Now I just hope that when people go out this evening, I'll be able to sell more,” Thiện shared.

Although she lives in Thu Duc City, Nguyen Hai Van brings her flowers to Nguyen Van Cu Street to sell on holidays. Ms. Van says she's been in the flower business for 7-8 years, but it's becoming increasingly difficult. "This year's Valentine's Day is terrible. From yesterday until now, I've only sold 2-3 large bouquets. It rained yesterday, so sales were slow. I'm just hoping for today. Even though the prices are lower than in previous years, people keep coming in, asking about prices, and haggling. Even though I've already lowered the price, they still won't buy," Ms. Van said dejectedly.

Our observations at Ho Thi Ky flower market show that the flower business is somewhat more vibrant, with some shops having a constant stream of delivery drivers picking up flowers. Holding a bouquet of sunflowers she had just bought, Le Phuong My Ngoc, a student at the University of Health Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, said: “Today is Valentine's Day, and I don't have a boyfriend, so I bought flowers for myself. The flower market wasn't too crowded this morning, so I had plenty of time to choose flowers. After buying the flowers, I plan to go to the Saigon Zoo with my friends.”

Accompanying My Ngoc, Pham Vu Phuong Thao, a student from the University of Health Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “This morning we took the bus from the university village to come here to buy flowers. They sell many kinds of fresh flowers here, especially roses, but I chose sunflowers because I like them more. This is like a gift to myself on Valentine's Day; even without a boyfriend, I can still make myself feel happy.”

Roses are the most popular flower on Valentine's Day.

Nguyen Ngoc Si, an employee at Tuong Vi flower shop, said that fresh roses are the best-selling flowers on Valentine's Day, with a bouquet ranging from 300,000 to 500,000 VND, and larger bouquets costing nearly a million VND. "The number of customers today is only sporadically low, not yet high. I'm hoping for more buyers tonight," Si said.

Ms. Do Quyen, owner of the Do Quyen flower shop in Ho Thi Ky market, also said that this year there are fewer customers buying flowers than in previous years. “Today is a holiday, so the price of fresh flowers has increased by 10% compared to normal. During this time, my shop mainly sells roses and hydrangeas. The price of a bouquet ranges from 350,000 to 500,000 VND,” Ms. Quyen said.
