The Speaker of the National Assembly and his wife began an official visit to Senegal from July 22-24 at the invitation of the Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye.
Welcoming National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and his wife and delegation at the airport were Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly El Malick Ndiaye, along with several members of the Standing Committee of the Senegalese National Assembly, the Director of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , and the Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly.

On the Vietnamese side were the Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria and concurrently to Senegal, Tran Quoc Khanh, embassy staff, and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Senegal.
Local people welcomed National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and his wife and delegation with spectacular traditional dances.
This is the first official visit by a key Vietnamese leader to Senegal since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1969.
It is expected that National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man will hold talks with Senegalese National Assembly Chairman El Malick Ndiaye; the two sides will sign a cooperation agreement between the two parliaments to create a legal framework for strengthening relations between the two legislative bodies.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, together with the Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly, will co-chair a policy and legal seminar on promoting cooperation in agriculture, trade, and investment between Vietnam and Senegal.

The Speaker of the National Assembly will also meet with President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye of Senegal and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of Senegal. During the visit, the Speaker and his delegation will undertake several other activities.
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1969, the two countries have maintained good relations and cooperated effectively within the United Nations, the Francophonie, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Trade between the two countries has progressed positively recently, reaching over $81 million in 2024; in the first four months of 2025, Vietnam's exports to Senegal reached over $43 million, equivalent to the entire year of 2024.
It is estimated that there are approximately 3,000 Vietnamese and people of Vietnamese descent in Senegal, mainly consisting of about 300 families where the wife is Vietnamese and the husband is Senegalese, who settled there from the 1950s and 1960s, and their descendants.
This visit is expected to provide impetus to deepen bilateral economic, trade, and parliamentary relations.
