Woman goes to emergency room with motorcycle kickstand piercing her calf

While driving, Ms. PBN (42 years old, residing in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City) was involved in an accident where the motorcycle's kickstand pierced her left lower leg. She was promptly taken to the hospital for emergency treatment by local residents.

Ms. N. was admitted to the hospital with severe bleeding in her lower leg, abrasions, and a motorcycle kickstand piercing her left lower leg. A CT scan revealed an open fracture of both bones in her left lower leg.

Upon admission, doctors from the Emergency Department, in coordination with doctors from the Orthopedics Department of Xuyen A General Hospital, immediately stopped the bleeding, bandaged the wound, and performed surgery to remove the foreign object from the lower leg.

The patient was taken to the emergency room with the motorcycle's kickstand embedded in his shin.

On November 19th, Dr. Nguyen Duy Toan, a specialist at Xuyen A General Hospital, stated that the patient was anesthetized, the wound was disinfected, and the foreign object was removed. During the procedure, the team tried to avoid damaging the surrounding soft tissues.

After removing the motorcycle kickstand from the lower leg, the surgical team cleaned the damaged tissues, debrided the wound, and sutured the severed tendons and muscles. After 7 days, the patient underwent a second surgery to fix the bone using an intramedullary nail.

Following the surgery, Ms. N. received wound care and monitoring at the Orthopedics Department. Currently, her health is stable, blood circulation is good, there is no pus or swelling. She is being guided through rehabilitation exercises to regain her mobility.

According to Doctor Nguyen Duy Toan, in cases like Ms. N.'s, if not treated promptly, it could lead to infection, blood clots, and in severe cases, amputation of the leg. In similar cases of accidents involving foreign objects penetrating the body, people should not attempt to remove the object themselves, but should bandage and immobilize the wound and quickly take the victim to a medical facility.
