Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Le Anh Duc - Head of the Training Management Department at the National Economics University (NEU) - said that out of more than 8,200 new undergraduate students this year, about 80% have international English certificates, equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or higher.
Of the nearly 7,000 new students who were recently certified by the university as meeting the English proficiency requirements upon enrollment, approximately 96% achieved an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher, and about 82% achieved a score of 6.5 or higher.
Currently, the school's output standard is 5.5 for the standard program; 6.0 for the high-quality, application-oriented program. For the English-taught and English-language programs, it is 6.5.
Previously, the number of candidates with IELTS certificates and other foreign language certificates applying to the National Economics University was recorded at approximately 22,000 (an increase of nearly 50% compared to last year).
According to Mr. Duc, the number of new students meeting the English proficiency requirements right from the start of their studies reflects that the National Economics University's entrance requirements, in addition to core academic competencies, have been elevated to a higher level in English skills.
"This makes it easier for students to access learning materials in English, thereby contributing to improving the quality of education... In addition, it helps the university to more easily implement the Project to develop English as the second language at the National Economics University," Mr. Duc said.
Earlier in July, the National Economics University issued a plan to develop English as the second language in the university. The specific goal of the plan is to have at least 30% of its courses taught in English in 100% of its training programs starting in 2028.
Specifically, from 2030 onwards, graduates of the National Economics University must achieve a minimum English proficiency level of B2 or equivalent to IELTS 6.0. Currently, the university requires a minimum IELTS 5.5 for programs taught in Vietnamese.
