According to a newly released report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), approximately 40% of skilled foreign workers choose to stay in Japan.
This is a relatively high percentage, which is helpful for the Asian nation struggling to cope with this labor shortage. According to the report, 50% of the approximately 3 million foreigners living in Japan in 2022 were permanent residents. The other half mainly consisted of temporary migrant workers and their families, technical trainees, and international students. Of the skilled foreign workers who came to Japan for the first time between 2011 and 2017 on engineer or office work visas, 40% remained in Japan after five years.
However, the report also notes that finding employment remains a challenge for international students, as only a few universities support this group in finding internships during their studies.
