On June 22, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis agreed to hold consultations on the bloc's tariffs on imported electric vehicles manufactured in the Northeast Asian country.

According to a press release from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Wang Wentao was invited to attend a virtual meeting with Dombrovskis.
Earlier that day, during a meeting with German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck, who was visiting China, Minister Wang Wentao stated that Beijing was ready to engage in dialogue and consultation on the electric vehicle issue if the EU showed genuine willingness to sit down at the negotiating table.
The Chinese Minister of Commerce expressed that China is ready to consider the legitimate concerns of both sides in a reasonable and professional manner to avoid escalating trade conflicts.
He said: "Beijing hopes Berlin will play an active role in the EU, pushing the European side to reach an agreement with China. If the 27-member bloc maintains its position, the world's second-largest economy will implement necessary measures, including potentially initiating legal action under the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement mechanism."
Previously, the EU argued that China provided “generous” subsidies to domestic car manufacturers, giving them an unfair competitive advantage over European manufacturers.
For its part, Beijing has opposed the proposal, warning of the risk of a trade war as automakers in the Asian powerhouse call for import tariffs on EU internal combustion engine vehicles.
