After the Israeli army withdrew in early April, more than 400 bodies were found in multiple graves near the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, and at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the Palestinian Civil Authority (PNA) said.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called the incident shocking and called for an investigation. The US has also urged Israel to provide more information about the incident.

For its part, Israel has rejected the Palestinian Authority's claim, calling the accusation that the Israel Defense Forces buried bodies in mass graves "baseless."
About 56 percent of buildings in the Gaza Strip were damaged, including several major hospitals, according to an analysis by researchers at Oregon State University and the CUNY Graduate Center. Israel has faced international criticism for its attacks on medical facilities, saying Hamas is using hospitals as command centers.
The United Nations says more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel-Hamas hostilities since Hamas launched its offensive on Israel on October 7, 2023. In addition, about 1,200 Israelis have been killed in Hamas attacks and more than 200 have been kidnapped.
Nasser Medical Complex
Citing the Palestinian Civil Defense Organization, after the Israeli army withdrew from Khan Younis' Nasser Hospital on April 7, mass graves were found on April 21 within the hospital grounds with at least 324 bodies, later increasing the number to 392 in a press conference.

Ravina Shamdasni, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said reports from the Palestinian Civil Defense Agency that the bodies found in the mass grave included elderly people and women. Some of them were found naked and with their hands tied, raising concerns about potential war crimes.
“ Some of the bodies were found with their hands tied, which represents a serious violation of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and these need to be further investigated,” Ms. Shamdasani said.
Al-Shifa Hospital
The Israeli military first attacked Al-Shifa, Gaza City's main hospital, in November 2023 and discovered a Hamas command center with tunnels underneath.
Israeli forces withdrew from Al-Shifa Hospital on April 1, the United Nations reported. At least 381 bodies were recovered from the area around the hospital earlier this month. According to the Gaza Health Ministry , another 30 bodies were found in the hospital yard, some buried under garbage, by mid-November.

President Biden recently signed a US aid package that will provide Israel with $14.1 billion in military aid. The package also includes an additional $9.5 billion in funding that will go toward humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including those in Gaza and Ukraine.
