"The past year has been a significant one for both our countries as we have expanded our relationship in almost every area. This is a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in which the United States and Vietnam are openly and actively working towards shared prosperity and the future security of both countries," Ambassador Knapper stated at the seminar "A Strong Year: Celebrating the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," held on September 19 in Hanoi. "In other words, a successful Vietnam means a successful America, and a successful America means a successful Vietnam," the diplomat emphasized. More than a year ago, on September 10, 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden visited Vietnam and met with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The two leaders agreed to elevate the Vietnam-U.S. relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace , Cooperation, and Sustainable Development. A year after this historic event, Mr. Knapper reviewed the highlights of cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade and investment, education and training, science and technology, health, environment, combating climate change, clean and sustainable energy, defense, and addressing the consequences of war. He reiterated that one of the key focuses of cooperation is the US's desire to work with Vietnam to help build a stronger and higher-value semiconductor industry, as well as attract more foreign investment. According to the diplomat, many world- class American companies are investing or want to expand their investments in Vietnam, such as the high-tech giants Intel and Amkor... "These are top-tier companies in the world, and they want to be present in Vietnam, helping to make Vietnam an attractive place for high-tech investors," he emphasized. To capitalize on this wave of investment, the American diplomat believes that a crucial factor is Vietnam's need for a high-quality and skilled workforce . The United States and Vietnam are cooperating to develop their workforce, including training and education , ensuring that workers have the necessary skills to adapt to 21st-century industries. Recently, the U.S. announced a new initiative to help Vietnam train electrical engineers, computer scientists, technicians, and instructors to expand training and education activities. The U.S. diplomat also reiterated cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. He praised Vietnam's direct power purchase agreement mechanism, a crucial step demonstrating Vietnam's commitment to allowing companies and investors access to clean and reliable energy sources. He also mentioned Vietnam's goal of gradually making English a second language. He affirmed that the U.S. wants to support this process, with various programs promoting English language education, as well as in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. He assessed that the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and the United States remains very large. Vietnam is the eighth largest trading partner of the United States, while the United States is Vietnam's number one export market. Besides investments from the US and Vietnam, he also looks forward to investments from Vietnam into the US. According to him, these activities will create jobs and bring the two countries closer together. Looking ahead to the 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations , the US Ambassador emphasized that 2025 will mark 30 years since the normalization of relations between the two countries. He stated that the relationship between Vietnam and the US has developed strongly over the years and is now limitless in many areas. He believes there is still much room for the two countries to continue cooperating and further enhance their relationship. "We truly want a strong, independent, prosperous, and resilient Vietnam. I believe we have seen the United States take concrete steps to ensure that our two countries grow closer, sharing prosperity and sharing peace and security for our two peoples and future generations," he emphasized. Speaking to the press, Mr. Knapper said the US side is very excited about the upcoming visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to participate in the United Nations General Assembly event. The US Ambassador believes this will be a meaningful trip and the US side is very much looking forward to General Secretary and President To Lam's visit. In addition, he said the US welcomes Vietnam's increasingly prominent role on the international and regional stage. He hopes that the US will stand alongside Vietnam on its journey to becoming a stronger, wealthier, and more prosperous nation.
