According to GizChina , this expert suggests that iPhone users are encouraged to update their phones to the latest iOS version as soon as possible, because otherwise, they risk losing access to their phones in the future. This is because older iOS versions are about to lose essential functions, such as access to Apple Maps for navigation, Siri for voice control, and the App Store for essential apps.
The iPhone 5 is among the devices affected by Apple's new policy.
The upcoming update appears to focus on iPhones running iOS 11.2.6 and earlier, resulting in users of these devices being unable to use the main software. iPhone 5 and older devices will be affected. However, even iPhone 7 users are at risk if they haven't updated their system software. The latest iOS version for the iPhone 7 is iOS 15.7.5, which Apple released on April 10th.
User @StellaFudge stated on Twitter: “Starting in early May, access to Apple services, except iCloud, will stop working on devices running iOS 11.2.6… Users may receive an update prompt.”
If you don't receive an iPhone update notification, you can do it yourself by using the Settings app on your phone, then going to General > Software Update and waiting for your iPhone to download the update before installing it.
To date, Apple has not commented on the aforementioned rumors; however, the company recently released an update on its help page that hinted at this plan. In the announcement, Apple confirmed that some older software versions will not work with certain Apple services, including the App Store, Siri, and Maps. The company advises users to update their devices so they can continue using the services.
