The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has just announced the recruitment of an additional 2,203 students for 10th grade in the 2024-2025 school year at 36 public high schools. Eligibility requirements for this supplementary recruitment include students who were not admitted to any of their preferred schools and whose combined entrance exam scores in Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language, plus priority points, are greater than or equal to the cutoff score for their third choice of public high school.

To date, many schools report receiving only a handful of applications, failing to meet their assigned quotas. Schools in suburban areas receive fewer applications due to their inconvenient locations for students to attend. Conversely, top-tier schools in the city center, which attract many applicants, have excessively high admission scores, resulting in fewer applications meeting the eligibility criteria.

Mr. Luong Van Minh (Principal of Can Thanh High School, Can Gio District) reported that the school only received 3 applications for supplementary admissions, while still lacking 89 places. This was not unexpected, as Can Thanh High School is located 60 km from the city center, and students from other areas rarely choose to apply to the school. Mr. Minh further explained that local students who passed the entrance exam had already submitted their applications, while the few remaining did not meet the admission criteria. Meanwhile, students from the city center rarely choose to enroll in Can Gio District because it is too far. "Therefore, even with supplementary admissions, we cannot fill all the available places. The school also considered using a daily shuttle bus to attract students, but it was not feasible," Mr. Minh added.

Many high schools in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, despite holding supplementary admissions, received very few successful applications. Ms. Bui Minh Tam (Principal of Le Quy Don High School, District 3) stated that many students wanted to attend the school but did not meet the application requirements. “Combining the requirement of failing all three first-choice applications and having a test score equal to or greater than the cutoff score for the third choice (23 points), it’s difficult for any student to meet the criteria. Therefore, the school received no applications despite having 15 vacancies,” Ms. Tam explained.

Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) and Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District) were left empty-handed after a week of announcing supplementary admissions because no students submitted applications. Mr. Tran Cong Tuan (Principal of Phu Nhuan High School) shared: “The school is short 12 slots because some students who were admitted transferred to private schools or went abroad for further studies. According to regulations, candidates must have a score of 24 points or higher and fail all three of their preferred choices to be eligible to apply for supplementary admissions. The number of candidates who meet this criterion is very rare.”

Representatives from Nguyen Du High School (District 10) reported that the minimum admission score was 20.5. Therefore, despite having 19 vacancies, only 3 candidates met the criteria to apply. Go Vap High School (Go Vap District) had 50 vacancies but only received 10 applications. A school representative explained that many students in the area and surrounding localities wanted to enroll but did not meet the requirements. The minimum admission score was 17, which is quite high compared to other schools in the area.

High schools are expected to announce the list of supplementary admitted students on August 6th. From August 7th to 4 PM on August 12th, schools will accept these supplementary admitted students.
