On October 18, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the US Department of Agriculture and CropLife Asia Association to organize the Forum on applying science, technology and innovation towards sustainable agricultural development.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien affirmed that the agricultural sector must transform to green for sustainable development.
The forum aims to introduce to managers, agricultural experts... about development trends, integration of new technologies, creative solutions towards sustainable agriculture, adapting to climate change.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, from a country with food shortages, Vietnam has become one of the world's leading agricultural exporters. The agricultural sector plays an important role in the economic structure, ensuring national food security.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the achievements in the agricultural sector have a huge contribution from science and technology. According to estimates, science and technology contribute about 35% to the success in agricultural production. Thanks to science and technology, the growth rate of the agricultural sector has always been maintained at a high level.
During the period 2020 - 2023, Vietnamese scientists researched and created 148 recognized plant varieties. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recognized 36 technical advances put into production, helping to increase productivity and product quality to ensure domestic consumption and export.
Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that the food export market is constantly expanding. To meet the standards and requirements of the export market, Vietnam aims to develop into a country that produces and supplies food in a transparent, responsible, and sustainable manner.
Currently, Vietnam is transforming the food system towards green, low-emission and sustainable, promoting the development and application of innovative science and technology in agricultural production; replicating the public-private partnership model, and promoting the application of digital technology in agricultural value chains.
"The agricultural sector is promoting the application of advanced technology in the world to achieve the goal of becoming a transparent and responsible food supplier for the world," said Mr. Tien.
Mr. Ralph Bean, Agricultural Counselor (US Embassy in Vietnam), affirmed that in the context of climate change happening globally, the need for sustainable agricultural practices is becoming important to maintain and ensure food security.
Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and CropLife Asia signed a memorandum of cooperation to promote the application of science and technology to develop sustainable agriculture.
Sharing his experience in agricultural development in the US, Mr. Ralph Bean said that the potential for applying biotechnology in agriculture is huge, such as: precision breeding, genetic engineering, increasing micronutrients through biology, enhancing disease resistance, etc.
In addition, biotechnology is an effective tool for agriculture to develop crops that can adapt to climate change, produce products with higher nutritional content, and can overcome environmental problems, helping to increase food production.
At this forum, the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) and CropLife Asia Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation to promote research, development and application of advanced solutions and technologies for the period 2023 - 2030.
Accordingly, the two sides will promote communication activities, information sharing, policy consulting, training, and in-depth scientific seminars to update and encourage the application of solutions, achievements of science and technology and advanced innovation in agriculture. In addition, the cooperation program will have activities to support farmers in accessing and applying new scientific advances in agriculture, aiming at the goal of sustainable agricultural development in Vietnam.
